I whistled the dogs and we got back into the truck. We slowly drove past the engine and up the slope.
When we arrived at the top the disaster became visible. It had been a big plane, probably a Boeing 747. I guess that the crew had tried an emergency landing on the road. The airplane had touched down about half a mile back, climbed the hill with tremendous forces working on it. Perhaps the pilot had mistaken this slow rise for flat land? The plane had lost its engine, bounced up, came down again and had crashed and shattered in thousands of pieces. They covered the entire highway.
In shock I turned away, fearing to see hundreds of corpses lying in the countryside. However it obviously had been a cargo plane. The fragments were spread out over at least 700 yards, efficiently blocking the road. Between the remains of the plane itself broken boxes, electrical equipment, car engines, motor bikes, rotten fruits, dead flowers and numerous mailbags were visible.
