09:26They're 6-1 start.
09:27We just had Alley talk with John Moran.
09:29Shaden Sharp hasn't played this season.
09:31A meniscus tear, right knee in the offseason.
09:35And V. Krejci fractured his left ankle the other night.
09:39So he is now out indefinitely.
09:42So they're going through all, and those are major contributors to this team.
09:46It is, and a lot of teams are dealing with injuries,
09:48but here with Portland, integral part of what they wanted to do.
09:51But yet and still, here we are with the Blazers still sitting at the top of the charts in the
09:57West.
09:58Hanson inside.
10:00Yang Hanson, who's out of China, who played 34 games last year and a lot of G League time.
10:07Off the bench moments ago, Kessler picked up his second.
10:11And a former 16th overall pick by Memphis.
10:13Now a Blazer from China, where he really made his mark on the radar
10:19in international play in the World Cup qualifiers,
10:23playing well for China,
10:26is on this Blazer team,
10:28and they think he's got a lot of promise.
10:30Way does that 7-1 during the free throw shooter.
10:33Nice touch outside, but also is another like clinging to facilitate it with the ball in his hands now.
10:39His minutes are going to be limited based around,
10:41you know, foul trouble in situations like that,
10:44but a future project ahead here in Portland.
10:48Now we've got a little full court here by the Blazers with 2-1⁄2 to go.
10:54Donchish, they've been trying intentionally not to have him bring it up.
11:00The wear and tear, they say, really, you know, we see Brunson go through it with the Knicks.
11:05And Luka does a lot of it, but they're trying to alleviate that.
11:09Stopping, starting, driving, surrounded, spinning, firing, got it!
11:13Wow!
11:1617-17 for Donchish.
11:18Did you say something about him bringing it up and a lot of pressure?
11:22And now he wasn't absorbed at that time.
11:25He took the blunt of that possession and paid it off at the end.
11:28Look at this.
11:30Here comes Lillard.
11:31He's got 10.
11:32Good feed.
11:36Yon couldn't get it.
11:38Puffed it up.
11:38Donchish down court.
11:40Reeves, the recipient, then fumbled it away.
11:42Reeves has been a little bit off tonight.
11:44Yeah, he's just been a half a second off,
11:46but I tell you who has in this, Luka.
11:48Listen, it's difficult when you bring it up.
11:50You have five sets of eyes looking at you all the time.
11:54That's why you want to give it up, get it back on the second side and attack,
11:58but Luka did an excellent job of being patient and beating the defense.
12:02Blazers are 8-12 shooting in the second quarter.
12:07Lillard.
12:08Five-0, nice defensive players on him.
12:11Step back, fake, fire, got it!
12:16Damian Lillard.
12:1813 for Dane.
12:2137th all-time leading the score in the history of this great game.
12:25Reeves on the fly.
12:26Will Cannon, he's got eight.
12:30You just know that Austin Reeves is just hanging around.
12:33Going to make something that you're looking at right here,
12:35getting to his right hand.
12:36A little step back.
12:38Patient, and Dane right here in his rear view,
12:41still got it off him right here.
12:44Dane, outstanding defense by Matisse Theibel,
12:47but guess what?
12:48Dane won that possession offensively,
12:50just a better offensive player that time.
12:52I will pick up the foul.
12:54You know what?
12:54I watched him both with the footwork.
12:55The footwork of Lange's and the footwork here at Lillard on the other end.
13:00Veterans who are meticulous with their footwork.
13:02Well, but also because they can beat you off the dribble with a jump shot or look inside,
13:06so they keep you off balance.
13:08So now as a defensive player,
13:10if you're not in the right position,
13:11a little pump fake gets you off,
13:13and all those guys need to shoot it like that,
13:16it's just a little bit of space to get that shot up and in.
13:20Free throw shooting tonight.
13:24Lillard with 14 minutes on the floor and 15 points.
13:2914 to 19 for the Blazers,
13:31and 11 to 15 free throw shooting for the Lakers.
13:33It's roughly the same.
13:35Here's Doncic.
13:3617 for him.
13:39Doubled.
13:40They blitz him.
13:42Three reads.
13:43And the rebound by Avdia.
13:45Now he's off to the races behind the back and through traffic,
13:48and the collision into Luka.
13:51And he took the charge.
13:54And he's down.
13:56And when you get in that position,
13:58you've got to gird your loins.
14:02Buckle up and gird your loins.
14:05Take a break.
14:07Walk it off.
14:09Deep.
14:10Take a deep breath.
14:12But here's Pigeons to the scouting report.
14:14You know,
14:15and then it gets downhill.
14:16He wants to get straight ahead.
14:18And Luka was primed in the pump to take this charge the whole time.
14:23That's two big bodies right there on the collision course.
14:27And Luka took the blunt of it,
14:28but able to pick up that offensive fire.
14:34Portland nine turnovers this quarter.
14:36Fourteen for the game.
14:37That's a lot.
14:39Donchich.
14:40Kessler.
14:42Mamou Kalashvili.
14:44It's a three.
14:48It goes back to within ten.
14:50They've trailed by 16.
14:52They had a meager lead at two early on.
14:54Final seconds.
14:55First half.
14:57Two top teams in the West.
14:59Top two offensive-rated teams in the entire NBA.
15:03in this first couple weeks of the season.
15:08It's a three.
15:09And it's short.
15:11Sissoko couldn't get it.
15:12Luka, a second.
15:14Long shot.
15:15Good if it goes.
15:16Oh!
15:18You can count it!
15:22Donchich!
15:27The boss loves it!
15:37How about this?
15:39Kessler the screen.
15:42And off the glass for three.
15:46And the Lakers in the first half on an 18-9 run to end the half.
15:53And we send it over to Allie.
15:55Thanks, Kevin.
15:56Denny, you guys managed to keep the Lakers fairly quiet offensively.
15:59But you know what a shot like that can do.
16:01What did you like defensively?
16:03What needs to be better in the second half?
16:14You've had your hands all over this one offensively as well.
16:1712-8-6 for you.
16:18How have you been able to create the advantage?
16:20I'm just trying to make the right play every single possession.
16:23I go downhill.
16:24I make a place for others.
16:25And that's what I do.
16:26I just need to go down there and make the right play.
16:29Denny, I appreciate the time.
16:30Thank you so much.
16:30He was a first-time All-Star last year for the playoff-bound Blazers.
16:35Now they have a 6-1 record unbeaten on the road.
16:39And tonight they take that 5-0 road record against Donchich and the Lakers.
16:45Stay tuned for the half presented by AT&T.
16:48You're watching the NBA on Prime.
16:55Presented by AT&T.
17:00Halftime at Crypto.
17:01The Blazers' defense went to work in the first half,
17:04but the Lakers closed the half on an 18-9 run as they are up 7.
17:08Welcome on in.
17:09I'm Taylor Rhodes with Dirk Nowitzki, Blake Griffin, and Udonis Haslam.
17:12And honestly, pretty impressive half there from Portland,
17:15especially on the defensive end.
17:17Held the Lakers to 38% shooting in the first half,
17:20one of their lowest marks this season.
17:22I mean, you're talking about one of the most explosive teams in the first quarter.
17:25I mean, they averaged 32 points in the first quarter.
17:27They held them to 20.
17:28They averaged about 65 in the first half.
17:29They held them to 53.
17:31Only gave up six assists.
17:32So I love what they're doing.
17:34They're really imposing their will.
17:35They're two.
17:35There's four for 23 from the three.
17:37So they got the three-point line.
17:38And this is what they do.
17:38So for a lot of people at home that haven't had a chance to watch this Portland team,
17:42this is who they are.
17:43They rate second in points off turnovers right now.
17:45They already have 12 points off turnovers.
17:47So they're getting to their game, and they're imposing their will.
17:49And they're also doing a good job on Luka.
17:51I mean, Luka finished strong, still has 20 points.
17:54But they made it hard on him.
17:56They're being physical with him.
17:57They're picking him up full court.
17:58They're denying him whatever their chance.
18:00They're fighting over screens.
18:02They're physical at the point of attack.
18:04They frustrated him a little bit there in the first quarter.
18:06Didn't really have much going there.
18:08They're staying down on his pump fake, trying to keep him off the foul line.
18:11So overall, they're doing a heck of a job.
18:13But, you know, this is still Luka.
18:15He made incredible shots, still tough shots and turnarounds that he made.
18:19Obviously, at the end of the half, he made an incredible shot.
18:22He was when he got the tee, a little frustration there with a little bit of reaching and fouling.
18:26Never seen him be frustrated before.
18:28Oh, he don't have it.
18:29But look at that.
18:30He wanted that shot.
18:31The way he walked off, he thought it was time.
18:35This is cash.
18:36This is cash.
18:36The tracking on that shot, 62 feet, the longest made shot of Luka's career.
18:41So he definitely came around there to end the half.
18:44What did you see, BG?
18:46I'm impressed with Portland's bigs.
18:48I mean, Klingon did a great job.
18:49Has to stay out of foul trouble.
18:50But they're just such a presence.
18:52Klingon combined with Rob Williams, I mean, there's really no letdown.
18:56They do a great job on the glass.
18:57Klingon did a great job on the offensive glass.
19:00And here, this is just a luxury to have him be able to stop and hit a three.
19:06But Rob Williams rolling, I mean, those guys put a lot of pressure on defense.
19:10So they're going to need to keep that going.
19:12But, I mean, if you're the Lakers, you're down seven.
19:15You shot 17% from three.
19:16And on the flip side, Portland shot 50% from three.
19:19So you've got to feel like that's going to even out a bit.
19:21So I think the Lakers did a pretty good job of staying with it
19:24through a very frustrating shooting half.
19:27Yeah, well, if you were watching our pregame show,
19:29you saw that Dirk handed out the Hot Playa honors to Luka.
19:34So before tonight's game, Allie Clifton, let him know.
19:37Our guy, your friend, Dirk, in the pregame show tonight
19:40gave you the Hot Playa nod.
19:42Anything you want to say to Dirk?
19:44Thank you, Dirk.
19:45But he don't even call.
19:47He's in L.A.
19:47He don't even call no more.
19:48So I expect that dinner soon.
19:50I expect that call.
19:52Oh, wow.
19:52That stayed between the two of you.
19:54Thanks so much, Luka.
19:55Good luck tonight.
19:55Thank you.
19:57Dirk called.
19:58Good to know.
19:59That hurts.
20:00You don't call anymore?
20:00That's good to know.
20:02I'm big time now.
20:03I don't have time for that.
20:07I have the bright lights.
20:09I understand.
20:09Luka also loves the bright lights.
20:11Before we take a break, we're going to take one more look
20:13at that incredible 62-foot buzzer beater from Luka.
20:18I mean, this was crazy.
20:20He wanted to shoot it so bad.
20:21Wow.
20:23He said, I knew it was going in.
20:26Long ago.
20:27Presented by AT&T.
20:29Walker Kessler was way happier for him.
20:32Come on, buddy.
20:33Let's celebrate.
20:35All right.
20:36What a shot.
20:40Take you around.
20:42NBA Cup group play action.
20:43West group A, Cooper Flagg, and the Mavs taking on the Jazz.
20:46Not a partial bounce pass.
20:48A little Cooper Flagg dunk contest this year.
20:50A little windmill now.
20:51Start the campaign, BG.
20:53Let's do it.
20:53Mavs win that one.
20:55West group B, Lamella Ball, and the Timberwolves
20:57taking on the Pelicans.
20:58Two minutes left.
20:59Timberwolves up five.
21:00David McDaniels with the block.
21:02Wolves go the other way.
21:05What's he going to do?
21:06Know something coming.
21:08Nice little pass to Io.
21:09Really?
21:09A simple play-o.
21:13Hi, IQ.
21:15West group C, Wimby and the Spurs taking on the Kings.
21:19First quarter here, Wimby throws the lob.
21:23Oh, wow.
21:23Castle, midair passes to Devin Vassell.
21:264-3.
21:28Spurs up 75-56.
21:32We are halfway home in the nightcap of our NBA Cup doubleheader.
21:35The Blazers lead the Lakers 60-53, and the second half is coming your way.
21:42The Half is presented by AT&T.
21:46Connecting changes everything.
22:11Welcome back to Los Angeles and the Emirates NBA Cup with coverage on Prime.
22:17Presented by Wingstop.
22:20The Blazers have led most of the way and by seven at the half, and we saw a big-time
22:25court
22:26length, a three-quarters court shot by Luka in the first half.
22:31What were some of your first-half thoughts?
22:33That despite the Lakers not shooting the ball extremely well, they kept it between a three-to-five possession game,
22:40which means you can go on a run and make some things happen.
22:42Portland kind of doing what they do best, but it's difficult when you have Luka because Luka,
22:48you want to take away some things.
22:49Luka comes off the pick, three defenders around him, Walker Kessler right at the rim.
22:54Reject the screen, you go to the opposite side.
22:56This is where it's tough because now it's two players around him, three-on-two on the back side,
23:01lob it up, Williams can score.
23:02Now, on Portland side, Denny Opti at the same way.
23:05Maintain your dribble.
23:07Force a defense, in this case, Kessler to have to make a decision, get it over the top,
23:11and here, maintain and just don't discontinue your dribble.
23:16Use your size, your athleticism, get yourself to the basket.
23:20Two different ways of getting it done, but two different ways of being effective, scoring,
23:24but also setting up your teammates.
23:26And then, once this changes everything, presented by Universal Orlando Resort.
23:34And through 24 minutes of basketball, you see some numbers there.
23:39Reeves, a cold start.
23:41Lillard kind of picked up some momentum as we got going in the first half.
23:47Lakers from three began the game one of 19.
23:52They've gone three of four since.
23:55And here is Klingon who got in some early foul trouble.
23:59He's got three.
24:00Lillard unhinges the defense, misses the triple, and Kessler collects it.
24:05And I'm sure Coach Michael Norris talked to his team about the turnovers.
24:1014 turnovers in that first half.
24:12This is a team that turned it over 15 times a game.
24:16So, already about at that number in the first half.
24:20Donchich counted fouled.
24:23Kamara was there defending Luka Donchich, who now has 22 points.
24:29He's had six consecutive games of 35.
24:33Yeah, he goes right.
24:34He's looking to score.
24:35That time, how about the presence of mind that kind of put the brakes on to pick up that foul,
24:41the concentration to follow through.
24:45101st game as a Laker tonight.
24:47He and Redick, the coach of the Lakers, were actually teammates for a while in Dallas years ago.
24:54And now, it's player-coach instead of player-player.
24:59In fact, Redick played with Drew Holiday, too, in New Orleans.
25:04So, he's got two guys that he used to play with.
25:07Redick is 42.
25:09Those guys, ninth year for Luka, 18th year for Holiday.
25:14And closing in on a triple-double with Advia.
25:17And there is a foul, and it's called on the Blazers.
25:21And Denny picks up number three.
25:24Yeah, that's another one right there.
25:25He wanted to get the handoff.
25:27He dribbled out most of the clock and got it today.
25:29But right there, impeding the movement right there of Austin Reyes picking up that foul.
25:35Closest, it's been since 7-4.
25:40It's Arabia.
25:43He's been starting.
25:47Donchich again over Kamara.
25:49Free.
25:51Rebound, volleyballed out by LaRavia.
25:53Picked up by Reeves.
25:54New shot clock with which to work.
25:56Henderson knocked it away.
25:58Vacuumed back in by Reeves.
26:00Down low.
26:01It's the twirling.
26:02LaRavia fighting Kitzler who got around Klingen.
26:05How about the footwork?
26:07I was just going to say that.
26:08And stepped through.
26:09Good point.
26:10Knowing that Klingen wanted to meet him up top.
26:12Really good patience, offensively, that's out by the Lakers.
26:17Lillard.
26:20Javier back to Lillard.
26:22They rotate the ball.
26:23Henderson over Dacic.
26:25Reeves the rebound.
26:27Two minutes gone in the third.
26:34Reeves and Henderson.
26:37Other screen.
26:39Kessler sets it.
26:41Klingen.
26:43Rill and Hale the rebound.
26:44He's got eight.
26:46Kondia through traffic.
26:48Laker defense was right there.
26:51And back to Luka.
26:53Who's eight of 18 shooting in from three, two of eight.
26:57Here's another foul.
26:58That's on Henderson.
27:04Lakers have been shooting well in the paint.
27:07Plus 12 in that category.
27:09And from three, the Blazers plus now 15.
27:19Reeves is down.
27:21Heavy collision.
27:22Foul call.
27:29That's on Henderson and number three on him.
27:35Nice talk with J.J. Redick before the game.
27:37He said, this is the first summer really since I've been here.
27:40We've been able to build our identity.
27:44And it was almost a three-way governorship, if you want to call that,
27:49between J.J. Redick, Bob Belenka, their GM, and Luka.
27:54I think the three of them really had, as you can see what he's done as the head coach,
27:59the three of them had the say in how this roster was constructed this offseason
28:03with nine new starters, nine new players.
28:08Shot clock at two for Luka.
28:12Klinging, Henderson, Abia in full flight.
28:16Short and fouled.
28:18Really, when he's coming full speed, he catches on a run.
28:21And you're backpedaling as a defender.
28:23Okay, what do you do?
28:24Awesome rings like, I'm standing in the way.
28:26But excellent job by Denny to really push the pressure.
28:29Back to the team-building thing.
28:30It reminds me of teams you built around LeBron.
28:34Another primary ball handler.
28:36A big that can be efficient inside.
28:39Shooters on the wing.
28:40Defensive players.
28:42Guys that don't really need the ball, but keep the court spread.
28:46And that's what you see with this versatility kind of in the Lakers roster
28:50around Luka and Austin Reeves.
28:55We asked J.J., you know, what is the residual of LeBron being here?
28:59And he said he appreciated his consistency, and it lingers even with the team now.
29:05And he said, what do you think Luka appreciated most?
29:07He said, well, now Luka is like LeBron.
29:09He is speaking up in film sessions.
29:12He didn't before.
29:13LeBron did.
29:14And he fouls LeBron's back.
29:18It's Doncic.
29:19Kamara there.
29:20Double by Klingon.
29:21Oh, there's a lot of traffic.
29:24Kamara cleans the glass.
29:25Lillard will go the other way.
29:29Spent last season rehabbing.
29:31They have left Achilles tear.
29:33Avdia, Klingon.
29:34Nice one-two punch.
29:36And how about the timing of Donovan Klingon in that dunker spot?
29:40If he steps in a half a second sooner, the pass is not available.
29:45The space is not there.
29:46But watch the drive.
29:48Three Laker defenders around, and there's Klingon.
29:51I don't know how you hide when you're seven foot on the baseline, but he played peek-a-boo
29:56and able to get that one up and in.
29:58That basket's out to 10-0 Laker run.
30:00Yeah, peek-a-boo is right.
30:01Here's LaRavia.
30:03Shot clock at six.
30:04Reeves three.
30:06It's not fun for Reeves tonight from distance.
30:10All of five.
30:11And so the game now all of six and three of 13 overall.
30:14Henderson, Lillard, Theibel there, a former Blazer, and fouls Lillard.
30:22Theibel played the last handful of years with the Blazers.
30:25Four years.
30:26Theibel picks up number two.
30:308-12 to go in the third.
30:33The seven and two Lakers.
30:35The six and one Blazers.
30:37Top two teams in the West coming into tonight.
30:40Top two teams in offense in the entire NBA.
30:44Klingon three.
30:45Bullseye!
30:49A couple threes for Klingon.
30:51So he can step out there.
30:53His game is continuing to evolve.
30:57And that right there, my friends, if he's able to shoot that frequently in the consistency,
31:03it opens up so much offensively.
31:05Excellent defense at that time by Klingon as well.
31:07Knocked it away.
31:08Lillard ends up with it.
31:09Laker fouls.
31:10The Blazers were trying to push the pace.
31:13I had the pleasure of covering Donovan, his tears at UConn.
31:18And Danny Hurley at the time, Dan Hurley at the time, did a couple things.
31:23Now, he didn't shoot a lot of threes, but he was able to knock it in.
31:25But he utilized his playmaking ability at free throw line at 10.
31:30I mean, um, extended.
31:32And you see a little bit of that more and more here.
31:35We're not here, but in Portland with the Blazers.
31:38I'll be at three.
31:40Rebound Kessler.
31:42Reeves moments ago picked up his fourth foul.
31:44He's got the ball now.
31:57He's got the ball now.
32:04Scoring champion last year, two of the last three.
32:06Lillard dives inside.
32:08Rebound Kessler.
32:09Off to Doncic.
32:11Past six games, he's averaged 43 points a game.
32:14The past six, 43 a game.
32:16Three there launched.
32:17Missed.
32:18Offensive rebound, Lakers.
32:20Kessler and Theibel.
32:21And Luka.
32:22He's been shooting 52% from the floor.
32:25Leaving.
32:26Setting.
32:27Gliding.
32:28Covered.
32:28Shot it.
32:29Fouled.
32:336.44 to go in the third.
32:37Lakers and Blazers.
32:39Two terrific starts to the season tonight on Prime in Game 2.
32:48From the hardwood to the field for a moment last week during TNF on Prime, a special moment
32:53in Green Bay as our very own Kevin Harlan and family honored his late father, the legendary
32:58Bob Harlan, and his lasting legacy with the Green Bay Packers.
33:01And Kevin, as the picks display, I'm sure it was a special evening with your loved ones.
33:06I know we missed you from our game in the Bay, but my friend, I think it's safe to say
33:11you were right where you were meant to be.
33:12Thanks, you guys.
33:13Nice.
33:13I didn't know that was going to happen.
33:15Thank you so much.
33:19The great thing about, you know, that stadium is it's probably the most famous football stadium
33:27in the country.
33:30And I was there for 37 years.
33:33I'd say I was in Minnesota watching.
33:39And we could feel the raw emotion coming through the TV screen of what you felt, how proud you were.
33:49And honored to be there to present that and see his name up there along with the other greats.
33:55Congratulations, my friend.
33:56Thank you.
33:57And only imagine the emotions at that time.
33:59Thank you so much.
34:01Klinging inside, fighting, Kessler finally comes up with it, but he stepped out of bounds.
34:05And the Blazers will retain possession.
34:09You know what's interesting about this game is that it's been so clunky, but yet the Lakers are here.
34:14And it may favor that has kind of disjointed a little bit to really good offensive teams.
34:19But the Lakers have just found themselves in a position just to hang around.
34:27But as we said, this is the fifth game and seven nights for the Lakers.
34:30No excuses.
34:30We're so early in the season.
34:32But there's a reason.
34:34There's a reason.
34:35Yeah.
34:37It's a three.
34:38That's a big shot right there by tomorrow.
34:40He's got a 12 threes now for the Blazers.
34:48Lakers have four.
34:51Halfway through the third quarter.
34:54Seven and two L.A.
34:56Here comes the driving Reeves.
34:58And he'll fire this one over.
35:00Drew Holiday.
35:01And collected by Kessler.
35:04Everything was done directly.
35:06Good help by Klingon to back Reeves up.
35:09But just couldn't secure the ball once he came off the rim.
35:12Bounced right into the hands.
35:15Kessler.
35:16It was Holiday.
35:17He had over 20 the first time they met 11 days ago.
35:19The three won't drop that time for Kamara.
35:23Donchich.
35:24Reeves.
35:25He's got a thicket of defenders are waiting at the other end.
35:27But he's still got it to go.
35:29And when you're not shooting the ball from three,
35:32well, you want to get closer to the pass at that time.
35:34Alton Reeves put his head down, shoulder in the chest.
35:37He's got a nice little jump shot on the base on Kessler's lead to three.
35:43It's a holiday triple.
35:45Klingon got a hand on it.
35:46And it's off the big man with the Blazers and out of bounds.
35:49It's L.A.'s ball.
35:51Just keep chopping wood.
35:53You're a scorer.
35:54You're going to have opportunities to kind of get your rhythm in the game.
35:56The ball is going to be in your hands.
35:58The next shot is the best shot.
36:01And that time a smart move by Austin, like I said, to get closer to the goal.
36:07Lakers 5-of-12 shooting here in the third.
36:10And the Blazers 3-of-9.
36:13Mamou Kalashvili is in.
36:20Doncic screen.
36:22They'll rotate and fire!
36:27Timeout Portland!
36:30Doncic has caught it now.
36:32Now he's got 29 points.
36:39And the Lakers have come back to tie.
36:43We've had a couple of these now at 68.
36:47He revolved around the screen.
36:49He leads a 7-on, 7-0 L.A. run to tie the game at 68.
36:59He's brought to you by Wingstop.
37:02Game on!
37:03Flavor on!
37:03Wingstop is here!
37:05By CarMax.
37:07Want to drive?
37:09And by Spectrum.
37:11Say hi to America's connectivity company.
37:14Well, the Doncic-Reeves combined.
37:17Bye!
37:18Bye!
