00:01You used to find him under center on Saturdays, slinging the football for those Razorbacks.
00:07Play fake, Sterner steps out of trouble, leads to a wide open receiver, it's Cobbs, towards the end zone, touchdown!
00:16Now, you hear old, dirty, red Clint Sterner playing quarterback for us here on 95.7 The Fan each afternoon.
00:24I don't necessarily have to rip your head off and mess in your neck.
00:26It's time for Clint's College Football Check-In.
00:30That allows Tyler a little freedom to get a little freaky with the open.
00:33Live on the drive.
00:37Look like he got a little freaky with the open. There it is.
00:40Well done.
00:41There it is.
00:41Well done.
00:42It's an official segment now.
00:44Yeah, hell yes, man. College football, baby.
00:46There we go, Clint's College.
00:47We got the CFP rankings coming out this week.
00:52Tonight?
00:52Yeah, but we got to get your top five first, though.
00:54Well, yeah, that's definitely the second most important.
00:56Yeah, there you go.
00:58Clint's College Football Check-In.
01:00Another thing unsponsored that's there for the taking, right there.
01:03Great during college football season, man.
01:05Absolutely.
01:06Especially, like, from the start of the season to now before the college football playoffs come out.
01:10I mean, you need something to bank on.
01:12Yeah, I see.
01:12And again, Clint's not ranking what the committee is.
01:17He's ranking what he believes his top five are.
01:20Now, they may differ from the committee, or maybe not.
01:23All I know is they're shuffling the deck every week because somebody worth a damn just loses.
01:28It seems like every week.
01:30And not just really, just one multiple.
01:32Yeah, a lot of parity in college football right now.
01:34There it is.
01:35A lot of parity.
01:36Before we get cranking with that top five, I'll start with this.
01:39Notre Dame, the fighting Sean Pendergast.
01:41Once again, do not make my top five.
01:43The loss to BYU, it does not kill them.
01:45However, I do have a little bit of, I don't like the fact that they put that rule in place,
01:54where if they're in the top 11, they're automatically in.
01:56I don't like it.
01:58So, they're going to have to work a little harder to earn their way.
02:00But they do have Miami this week.
02:02Yeah, they'll earn their way.
02:03I think they've got SMU in a couple of weeks.
02:05So, they've got, you know, you win the games, the big games on your schedule moving forward,
02:09and you can crack old dirty's top five.
02:11But right now, Notre Dame's going to be the first team out, Tyler.
02:14Number five.
02:17Them UCLA Bruins.
02:19I told you, Ron, I mentioned UCLA and Utah a couple weeks ago.
02:23And, boy, you looked at me side-eyed.
02:24You side-eyed me.
02:26I'm telling you, they're undefeated.
02:27Now, look.
02:28I just want you to know I'm still side-eyed.
02:29Look, I know, I know.
02:30Look, I mean, I thought the Oregon win was going to mean more than it actually does right now,
02:35but I still got to give them a little bit of credit for it.
02:37And I'm giving them credit for handling their business.
02:39When you get to 8-0, when you get to 8-0, there's something to be said about going out
02:44every week
02:45and putting your best product on the field and handling your business
02:48and not losing to a team that you shouldn't lose to.
02:52I think the Oregon win for a team like UCLA with that program,
02:56the dysfunction that that program's lived in for a couple years,
02:59that win midseason, I think, flipped the script on who UCLA actually is
03:06and how serious we should take them.
03:08So, again, they're 8-0 right now.
03:10I'll be honest with you.
03:11I think I looked at their schedule.
03:12I think they finished the season right there versus USC.
03:18And after what USC did to Ohio State last week,
03:21obviously that could be a hell of a win for them if they're able to get that done.
03:25They don't have a real challenging schedule the rest of the way.
03:28So, they're going to be a team, Ron, that's –
03:29I'd say.
03:30Well, they're going to have to be a team that's –
03:31I just want to go with the whole point.
03:33They can't afford to lose.
03:33You got to win out.
03:35You got to stay undefeated if you're going to be damn sure in my top five.
03:40And I'll be honest, it may not shake out for you in a good way in the top 12
03:46or let's say top 11 because Notre Dame's going to take one of the spots.
03:50So, I think they got to go undefeated.
03:52But I got UCLA right now because they're handling their business.
03:56And they do have a good win in that Oregon win midseason right now.
04:00So, I'm going to go UCLA at five.
04:01Yeah, they're pulling a Miami over there in the West Coast.
04:04Sure.
04:05They got one game on their schedule currently against a ranked team.
04:10Not win, one game.
04:12They have not played it yet.
04:13And it is against USC.
04:15As you said, the Oregon game you thought would be bigger.
04:18They need Oregon to pick up some steam and to finish well for them.
04:22But right now, I mean, it's Cal, San Diego State, Purdue, Maryland, Oregon,
04:28Wisconsin, Michigan State.
04:29They snuck Nevada in last week somehow.
04:32Yeah, got a good APG shutout.
04:34Minnesota, Illinois, Michigan, and SC.
04:38They pulled that schedule out.
04:39Mm-hmm.
04:40Hey, man.
04:41Good for them, man.
04:41That's what happens, baby.
04:44Sometimes that happens in the big, don't it?
04:46In the big ten, yeah.
04:47Sometimes that right there happens.
04:49Well, we didn't hold it against Ohio State when that happens.
04:51So, I don't want to hold it against UCLA when that happens either.
04:55Wasn't that damn bad?
04:56Yeah, what's that?
04:57I said it wasn't that damn bad.
04:58Yeah, it wasn't that bad.
04:59Yeah, that's really bad right there.
05:00But handle your business.
05:03And I got them at number five right now for just doing what they should do.
05:06They've arrived.
05:07They're undefeated.
05:08I think we got to at least take them serious.
05:10I'm going to give credit where credit's due.
05:11They're undefeated, baby.
05:13Eight and oh right now.
05:14The number of the day is four.
05:17This one pains me because it goes against everything I've ever stood for.
05:21I know Georgia's one of the top five teams in America.
05:23I do believe that, so I'm okay putting them here.
05:26But the fact that they showed up against Auburn and peed down their leg and didn't handle their business, it
05:31pains me to have them in the top four.
05:33But as there's been so much carnage in the top five, top ten in college football over the last couple
05:38of weeks, it's hard to keep them out at this point, to be honest with you.
05:41But this is my pet peeve, Ron.
05:43Now that there's 12 teams getting in, it's not that big of a deal.
05:47But when there was four teams, I will cite when Ohio State won it all, I was beside myself that
05:54they got in, having lost to a 500-football team.
05:56I think it was Virginia Tech.
05:57Virginia Tech, right.
05:58And they had them at home, middle of the season.
06:01That just pains me.
06:03But there's been so much carnage at the top that Georgia's found a way that I just – it's Georgia.
06:08I do think they're one of the top five teams in the country, and I think they will be when
06:12this all shakes out.
06:13So I got Georgia at four.
06:16Number three.
06:18I'm going with them Indiana Hoosiers, man.
06:20There's something about – there's something about when you're – the last two weeks, they have been challenged in a
06:26big, big way.
06:28And they've answered the bell.
06:29They found a way to win.
06:30They did it last week with their backup quarterback.
06:33Now we'll see.
06:33I think that kid damn sure didn't look like a backup quarterback in that fourth quarter in overtime.
06:37We'll see what he can do as a starter.
06:40But I like Indiana at number three.
06:43The only, you know, obviously loss is to Ohio State.
06:47And a tight one, yeah.
06:48And that was the one where old buddy just – the receiver lost to where he was when he caught
06:52the fade route for the touchdown.
06:54He didn't even try to drag his feet.
06:55He thought he was in easy.
06:56And so they literally – their only loss came at the feet, no pun intended, of just a – not,
07:04you know, kind of losing your position on the field.
07:06So I still think Indiana, man, they're one of the top five teams in America, and I got them number
07:11three right now.
07:12I tell you, I – they got a real Denver Bronco field to me.
07:17Like, how – are they going to keep being able to pull these games out to fire?
07:22They just play so many tight games against all their competition.
07:26I think they're a good football team.
07:27But they have – some of these, they have everything go right except for that one time when the –
07:33Nick – I can't remember.
07:34Nick Marsh couldn't get his foot in in bounds against Ohio State.
07:37So we'll see.
07:39Indiana, number three.
07:40Finally, we come to my number two man.
07:43His name?
07:45Not real comfortable with this one.
07:46But I do like them.
07:47I've watched them quite a bit this year.
07:49Watched them beat a – stomp a mud hole in my Razorbacks early in the year.
07:53They've gone on.
07:54They beat U of H when U of H was on a good little run.
07:57They beat Cincinnati convincingly last week after Cincinnati beat Texas Tech.
08:01Big 12 matchup.
08:03Now they've got a huge game this week versus BYU that is going to – is obviously going to allow
08:09them to – I mean, people to take them real serious.
08:12But I've got them Utah Utes maybe at number two.
08:16I said this before.
08:17I think – I think the Utah Utes were the team in the Big 12 or the Pac-12, however
08:23you want to look at it, old school or now.
08:25They're a team that's got a real Big Ten SEC vibe to it.
08:32They always got dudes in the trenches that are really good.
08:36They're always good O-line.
08:38They're always good D-line.
08:39And it just seems like they were a Big Ten or an SEC team living in the Pac-12 or
08:45living now in the Big 12.
08:48And I think that still holds true.
08:50If they can stay healthy, look out for that quarterback out there.
08:53Dan Pierre, a little dual threat.
08:54Man, he's fun to watch.
08:57I was impressed with their maturity.
09:00Now, I think the previous week against Texas Tech for Cincinnati kind of probably woke them up.
09:06Yeah.
09:06And to maybe walk in there taking them really serious.
09:09But we've seen so many times this year top teams having big wins.
09:13They got a big win that night the previous week against Houston.
09:16Yep.
09:17And then coming back and just going on the road and losing games to teams that they should lose to.
09:22We watched Florida, Ole Miss do it, multiple teams do it, and they beat the hell out of Cincinnati.
09:27Yeah.
09:28That game was over quick.
09:29Monster game this week for them, Ron, with BYU.
09:32In-state rival there.
09:34That will be a monster game.
09:36And so, that's one of the top three ballgames this weekend.
09:40Big college football weekend coming up for us all.
09:43All of us college football fans for sure.
09:45And Utah will be front and center.
09:48This is number one.
09:50To nobody's surprise, it's in Miami Hurricanes.
09:53They were challenged by North Carolina.
09:55But what I liked about this game, I watched a good chunk of this game.
09:58What I liked about this game is they were challenged.
10:00They were even down at some points throughout the game.
10:04And Miami, it was kind of back and forth, back and forth, dogfight, scare them a little bit.
10:08The minute that North Carolina, they fumbled in the fourth quarter.
10:12And the minute they fumbled, Miami turned around and took, I mean, just foot to throat.
10:18Just said, all right, this is our chance.
10:20And they went up two scores late in the fourth at that point in time.
10:23And North Carolina couldn't bring them back.
10:26So, the Miami Hurricanes are my number one team in America right now, undefeated.
10:31As we've discussed, my number two team, the Utah Utes play BYU.
10:37It's a big game this week.
10:38Also, my number six team, which is Notre Dame, is playing number one.
10:45And so, we will see how, I'll be honest with you, a little test leading up to this Miami-Notre
10:52Dame game for me, Ron.
10:53This was one, I expect them to handle North Carolina a little bit better than they did.
10:58So, I'm a little concerned about this Notre Dame game.
11:01The way they've played, both of these teams, I know this will not be the case, fellas.
11:07I think this should be almost an elimination game.
11:13I don't think the winner should be in the college football playoff.
11:21Because if Miami loses, and you just said they struggle with North Carolina, they shouldn't struggle with North Carolina.
11:29They struggle with Florida State, who didn't have fired their coach and flying banners over the thing with his name
11:35spelled incorrectly.
11:36They shouldn't struggle with that team.
11:38And if Notre Dame has two losses against the only two teams they've played worth a damn, then, I mean,
11:45their 10-2 feels a lot like some of the Penn State 10-win teams over the last couple of
11:50years.
11:50And I don't know that they should get in.
11:52But I think both of them are probably going to get in regardless of what happens in the game.
11:56But this is a big one.
11:58All right, who's the leader in the clubhouse for the Sterner Troops?
12:02No change there.
12:04Darian Mensah, the quarterback at Miami.
12:06I think he's got 25 touchdown passes.
12:09I think he's ran for two.
12:10So, 27 touchdowns he's responsible for in eight games.
12:13That's three.
12:14What is that?
12:15Three and a half a game damn near.
12:17So, yeah, he's running away with it when you look across the landscape, you know, of guys.
12:25The Julian Sane kid that got hurt at Ohio State, obviously.
12:29And now Jeremiah Smith is probably hurt by his injury, too.
12:32Yep, yep.
12:32I mean, you could argue that Malachi Tony, the receiver in Miami, is probably a hotter name right now, non
12:40-quarterback for the Heisman.
12:44So, you know, we'll see what happens down the stretch here for Miami.
12:48But I think it's Darian Mensah's.
12:51I think it's his trophy.
12:52I think it's his trophy.
