00:00Some breaking news, Delhi police registers FIR against Meta India.
00:04Now this FIR has been registered over child sexual abuse content.
00:09That's the breaking news that we are getting.
00:12The Delhi police have registered an FIR against Meta India.
00:16Now this action follows directions from the National Human Rights Commission.
00:19It concerns child sexual exploitative and abuse material on Meta platforms.
00:24The National Human Rights Commission member Priyankanungo has confirmed this update.
00:30He emphasized the need for strict platform accountability.
00:33The legal case stems from recent investigations.
00:36Meta platforms like Instagram allegedly hosted paid advertisements with highly objectionable keywords.
00:43These ad links redirected users to external messaging channels.
00:47Illegal abuse material was being commercialized and sold there.
00:51The commission questioned Meta's role in this matter.
00:54the company as an active publisher of paid content rather than a passive intermediary.
00:59The panel highlighted potential violations of reporting laws under the POCSO Act.
01:05And this marks the biggest crackdown over digital child safety in India.
01:10My colleague Aishwarya Paliwal is now joining us with more details on this.
01:13Aishwarya, this is not the first time that Meta India is in fact being questioned over this child sexual abuse
01:20content on its platform.
01:21And now an FIR has also been registered.
01:24What more details are we gathering?
01:26Well, you know, this is something that the NCPCR has been looking at for quite some time.
01:30We had also seen how the Meta officials had visited not just NCPCR, but also had come in front of
01:37the Meta, the IT ministry.
01:40Something that we have seen the Meta platform do is that they had said that they will take cognizance if
01:45there is something that is flagged off on the platform.
01:49But this is something which in fact is not being done by Meta.
01:53And we have seen how there are a lot of ads which actually come not just on Facebook, but also
01:59on Instagram and also on WhatsApp.
02:01And this is something which puts children in the harm's way.
02:04That's the reason why we are now seeing this FIR being lodged.
02:08One thing that the Indian government has repeatedly said and released that if you are in India, you A, need
02:12to follow Indian roots and you also need to make sure that on your platform there is no abusive content
02:17which is being put up, especially when we talk about children.
02:20So, this is something that has not been done by Meta officials, which is why you are now seeing the
02:24FIR being registered against Meta platform.
02:28All right, Aishwarya, thank you for those details.
02:32So, action has been taken against Meta India and FIR has been registered over child sexual abuse content that was
02:40being peddled on Instagram.
