Small businesses try to recover Meta accounts after alleged breaches

Businesses across Western Australia have accused tech giant Meta of wrongfully removing their personal and business social media accounts.  The tech giant often cited a breach of its community standards for the removals, linked to the false detection of child abuse material.

00:18So was horrified when Meta suspended six of her accounts claiming they breached child regulations.

00:24Which is completely untrue. We very rarely if ever put children up on our Instagram because of the regulations.

00:33Ms Kempton says her attempts to fix the situation have been unnecessarily difficult.

00:38And six weeks on she's lost revenue and followers.

00:41We were getting messages by phone saying have you closed, have you shut down, have you gone broke.

00:48Years worth of photos have been wiped from Ms Kempton's business accounts.

00:52In effect erasing an archival database of her company's history.

00:56And she's not the only one with growing reports from frustrated business owners across the country.

01:05I've tried for three weeks every day, it's consuming my life.

01:09It took Samantha Antichnap almost a month to get her makeup company's account reinstated.

01:14Losing 80% of her business in that time.

01:21Meta relies on human reports and AI to remove accounts breaching regulations.

01:27And told the ABC people can appeal if they think a mistake's been made.
