00:00As Brazil lined up a free kick, the silly Zaire defender burst from the wall,
00:04sprinted at the ball and just booted it away.
00:08The referee gave him a warning and for the next 40 years,
00:12that clip ran on blooper reels all over the world,
00:15positioning the Zaire player as a clueless African who didn't know the rules.
00:19But Mwepu Ilunga knew the rules perfectly well.
00:22It's just he also knew that if his team let in too many goals,
00:26he might not ever see his family again.
00:29See, three months before this incident,
00:32Zaire had been crowned the football champions of Africa,
00:35and they'd just become the first nation from sub-Saharan Africa to ever reach a World Cup.
00:40And their dictator Mwepu Sese Seiko treated the team like his own personal trophy.
00:45He promised every player a car and a house just for qualifying,
00:49and he promised them a fortune more if they performed well at the World Cup in West Germany.
00:54However, when the officials that Mwepu sent along with the squad pocketed the players' bonuses
00:59for themselves, the team had a hard time staying motivated as they realized that they were
01:04basically playing for nothing but promises, while the suits that lauded over them lived in luxury.
01:09So, in protest during their second match against Yugoslavia, they barely tried,
01:13and they ended up losing the game 9-0, one of the heaviest defeats in World Cup history.
01:19Back home, Mwepu felt humiliated.
01:21So, before the final match against the reigning world champions, Brazil,
01:25he sent his armed presidential guards to the team's hotel with a simple message.
01:30Lose by four goals or more, and none of you are coming home.
01:34So, by the second half, as Zaire were losing 2-0, and Brazil won a free kick just outside the
01:40box,
01:40the pressure was too much for Alunga.
01:43He snapped, charged out, and smashed the ball away in a desperate attempt to waste time
01:47and throw off the Brazilians.
01:49It was really a red card offense, but the referee could see Alunga was not thinking straight,
01:54so he took pity and showed him only a yellow as a warning.
01:58The game got even more intense as Brazil wrangled a third goal soon after,
02:03and as Zaire spent the closing minutes clinging on to dear life, they did it.
02:07The match finished 3-0, and the players had survived Mwepu's wrath by exactly one goal.
