Claude Code is one of the most capable coding agents available, but running it on Anthropic’s API or a subscription costs money. What many developers do not realize is that Claude Code and the model behind it do not have to be the same thing. In this video, I show you how to point Claude Code at OpenRouter and route its requests to free coding models, so you can keep the agent interface without paying Anthropic per token.
The setup comes down to a few environment variables. You set ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL to https://openrouter.ai/api, put your OpenRouter key into ANTHROPIC_AUTH_TOKEN, and explicitly empty ANTHROPIC_API_KEY so Claude Code does not fall back to Anthropic’s servers. OpenRouter exposes an Anthropic-compatible endpoint, which means streaming, native tool use, and multi-turn context all work without a local proxy. I also cover the newer ori CLI from OpenRouter, which configures Claude Code automatically and avoids manual variable hunting.
The free tier is real but limited. OpenRouter’s free models are capped at roughly 50 requests per day and 20 requests per minute. If you buy $10 of credits once**, the daily free-model limit rises to **1,000 requests per day**. Free models include coding-capable options like Qwen3-Coder and DeepSeek variants, but the exact list changes over time, so check OpenRouter’s free model page before you commit to one. For comparison, Claude Code on Anthropic’s API can cost **$0.31 for a short session and $1.39 for a long session** with Opus, while a 30-minute session on a cheap OpenRouter model can drop to around **$0.07.
