00:05now that is music to my ears victory Monday starts now is that the first loss of the year
00:12for the Vikings yes it is I love it is that a five and two football team in our city
00:20one back of the Vikings six and one and they're all right there nipping at their heels and they
00:27take them down for the first time good morning 97 one Jim Costa John Jansen Heather Park
00:32Gov and Greg behind the glass on this victory Monday John there's a lot to love about that
00:37performance there is and it was going to be an ugly game we learned that early I think we all
00:42went into it anticipating that when you play a defense like that it's going to be ugly I didn't
00:48necessarily know what the ugly would look like I didn't think it would be four sacks in the first
00:53half for Minnesota against Detroit some of that was blitz some of it was just a couple of guys got
01:00beat but in the second half they they figured some things out they settled down juice back at center
01:08and then all of a sudden they started running the football with efficiency and then at the very end
01:16of the game with about eight minutes left that's where hey you you lose obviously Jack Campbell you
01:22lose Jimmy Rolder you lose uh Brian Branch you lose a lot of guys defensively and they were talking
01:27about it on the broadcast like are they going to have enough guys to actually fill the roster I
01:31thought might we might see Sione Vocky go both ways because he was running the ball efficiently but
01:38we also know he was drafted as running back safety special teams guy would we see him be a two
01:45-way
01:45player for the Lions and I I said to Jack as he was sitting there you this is where this
01:52offense
01:53has to take a little time off the clock they have to possess the ball but they've got to go
01:58down and
01:58score they've got to exert their dominance and when you look at the runs that they had in that drive
02:05it was so impressive and so fun to watch the offensive line and the offense took over that game
02:15when they had to they rebuilt the offensive line to win that game last year against Minnesota they
02:22were overwhelmed up front it was ugly Christmas Day has has sat in their mind in our mind for a
02:28very
02:28long time but it was both meetings last year where golf was hit and hit often and they couldn't run
02:33the ball they actually ran for more yards yesterday than in both games last year combined and I was close
02:39when what I love about it yeah like by 100 yards Minnesota New Detroit was going to run it late
02:44you know it's coming and you still can't stop it that's how you know this offensive line is
02:50crystallizing solidifying becoming the unit they need them to be because at the most critical juncture
02:55of the game you can't stop it we're not even going to put Jared Goff in drop back situations we're
03:00just
03:00going to lean on you we're going to bully you when push comes to shove we're doing the pushing
03:06love that and it was I mean golf was in the mix in blocking I I'm sorry that's Mike Allstott
03:13to you
03:13on the Gibbs run I think it was the 17 yard run where he starts right there's nothing there right
03:23okay so let's not be you know too overwhelming on the offensive line because nothing there that one
03:30was all Gibbs they reverse direction golf sees it and he puts it in high gear whatever that is for
03:37him he was picking him up and putting him down and he he tries to get a block and I'm
03:42I'm I'm saying
03:44to myself I'm like don't hit him with your right shoulder or just chop him chop him go go go
03:49low
03:49and he didn't care and I tell you what that I same thing I told Jack at time they love
03:58Jared Goff as a
03:59teammate but moments like that get you really excited about your quarterback about guys that
04:06you're playing with because they are willing to do anything in the moment it may be a poor decision
04:12and it may not be all that effective but those moments make a team even better because now all
04:21of a sudden you're like hey if he's going to do that Blake Miller I better hold up just a
04:26little
04:26bit I better put just a little bit more into protecting this guy golf had the block on that
04:33Gibbs run yeah he also made it all the way down the field did he was he was in the
04:38he was in the
04:39screen yeah I wouldn't call it a big block or anything but he was all the way down for Gibbs
04:43touchdown earlier in the game yeah he was mixing it up they were fired up and that's such a big
04:48win
04:48for this football team it's now three straight wins it's two and oh in the division I would say
04:52driver's seat in the division but you you start to think about what this win means and it means a
04:57lot
04:57for this football team yeah and how excited were you when okay Gibbs goes for that 17 then they throw
05:07a
05:07little five-yard pass okay yeah we're moving the ball and then Sione Vakie is in the backfield
05:13and he goes for 12 hey let's keep him in there and he goes for 10 I mean he has
05:23improved so much
05:24and the thing that I got from him yesterday was you start to trust him you start to trust him
05:30in a
05:31game that was a huge game you heard Dan Campbell you heard Dan Miller like that's a playoff environment
05:37and you start to trust a guy like that in in a game in the fourth quarter wow what a
05:46great performance
05:50of course part of the story is the injuries on defense they had to overcome five injuries
05:54injuries in game on defense yeah the most concerning right now is Jack Campbell the update
06:00we have it's not much um and I don't want to be alarmist but until we hear about extremities
06:06moving yeah I worry about the person way more than I worry about the player I'm worried if he's going
06:14to walk I want to hear some good we all want to hear some good news about Jack Campbell because
06:20he lay limp on the field and had to be carted off John the only update we got from the
06:24Lions is that
06:25he's resting and will remain in a local hospital tonight for evaluation and monitoring the team
06:31will provide further updates as we have them it's scary stuff it is and your mind always goes to worst
06:36case scenario as you mentioned yeah um and I'm not going to say those words just because I don't want
06:41to put it out there and but that is a possible outcome and we just don't know speculating on either
06:49uh you know spectrum of what this injury could be because you watch it and you do see him go
06:54limp
06:54but you you look at you're like well it didn't look like a hit that would cause a catastrophic injury
07:03it hit itself right and and so but that's the that's the wild card you just never know and it
07:09is it's it
07:09is unbelievably scary and you saw how emotional everyone was on the sidelines you saw how emotional they
07:16were on the field and for them to be able to come out and and I know that a lot
07:20of it was
07:20hey let's go win this one for for Jack um I thought I thought they did a tremendous job of
07:28being able to
07:29refocus with that hanging that black cloud hanging over their heads well they showed the cutaway to
07:35age Hutchinson and it's he's welling up I mean he's emotional and he's trying to rally those troops
07:39and then Minnesota decides to go for it for for fourth down yeah and Detroit gets off the field
07:44yeah and and Aiden basically breaks Kyler Murray in half yeah that was awesome yeah he almost put
07:50him in the body bag that we were talking about last week I think I think Hutch and Barnes a
07:54sandwich
07:55yeah I think loss in the game and in that moment was that O'Connell didn't take the three
07:59there was enough time left that's playing to their identity all season long it's to is to put the
08:05game make the game closer and I think that you know they could have potentially gone on on one with
08:11a
08:11field goal possibly yeah there wasn't a shouldn't have been a kicker trust issue I mean he missed his
08:16first one of the year and it was 57 yards I mean I thought that was very overlooked and it
08:21played into
08:22the hands of the Lions emotions yeah I mean there was also the end of the game he had a
08:27fourth and
08:28five and he decided to punt it conventional wisdom and didn't get the ball back right which was the
08:33lesson that we had discussed last week with the Lions you might not get the ball back
08:38no puzzling stuff but hey we'll take it man yeah but I mean so you go to both decisions last
08:45week's
08:46by Dan with the defense that none of us have a lot of confidence in now growing more every game
08:52but for Kevin O'Connell he was probably thinking hey Brian Flores this defense we'll get it back
08:59right and that's what makes it so much more impressive for what the Lions did not just on
09:04the final drive where they scored their touchdown but the actual final drive of the game eight plays
09:1033 yards 253 and you salt the clock away and you get a chance to to play and call the
09:17best play in
09:19all the football victory formation I can't wait till till other people start diving a little deeper
09:25into the footage because you're gonna see some stuff in the run game that's gonna fire everybody
09:29up like not just surface level watching them salt this away but the use of the fullbacks and the
09:34tight ends and the heavier formations and really dictating things against Minnesota matching their
09:39aggression with a hammer of your own I mean that was just great football down the stretch it was
09:44um and just fun to watch I mean that that's really what it comes down to it was it was
09:48just a a lot
09:50of fun to be able to watch that game and you build them up they're not all as meaningful as
09:55that one was
09:56you know Minnesota for example or uh Miami for example next week is not going to have the same
10:00stakes or the same meaning but when those games show up on the calendar and you show up and play
10:04that way and win those games gets us fired up it's a victory Monday we'll take some phone calls and
10:09feedback 248-539-9797 Lions win it's 97-1
