00:04dogs aren't called man's best friend for
00:06no reason they've been the companions
00:07of humans for millennia however we
00:09actually don't exactly know how many
00:11millennia but now after discovering an
00:13ancient canine bone in 1985 and using
00:15new methods of radiocarbon dating
00:17scientists might finally have a better
00:19idea experts have now been able to
00:21pinpoint that the bone is from between
00:22seventeen thousand four hundred and ten
00:24and seventeen thousand and ninety six
00:26years ago and they've also confirmed it
00:28is in fact a dog and not a wolf meaning
00:30it's the oldest dog bone ever discovered
00:33and reveals some pretty interesting
00:34things about when dogs became
00:36domesticated science alert reports there
00:38are several theories about how that
00:39happened and while some involved methods
00:41of humans domesticating them others
00:43revolve around wolves self-domesticating
00:45themselves hanging around human
00:47settlements and scavenging from them in a
00:49symbiotic relationship but while we will
00:51likely never know the answer to how it
00:52happened these remains bring us one step
00:54closer to understanding when it happened
00:56they've now traced the DNA back to its
00:58origin and say it was a species that
01:00likely came into existence around twenty
01:02two thousand years ago during the peak
01:04of an ice age where humans and ancient
01:06soon-to-be domesticated wolves were
01:08forced into closer proximity in the few
01:10areas that life could survive
