US-Iran tensions surged on Saturday, October 31, as President Donald Trump said Washington still has one or two targets left to deal with in Iran, while Iran's supreme leader warned of an immediate response with no geographic limits.
Speaking at Mar-a-Lago in Florida, Trump said the United States had knocked out much of Iran's military and nuclear programme but could still deal with the remaining targets in ten minutes, while insisting Washington is not in a hurry to strike. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, speaking in Atlanta after a Group of Twenty foreign ministers meeting, said Trump has not made a decision on fresh strikes and that Washington would prefer a diplomatic solution, with talks through mediators including Qatar continuing. Iran's supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, warned the United States and Israel against new attacks, and according to reports ordered an immediate, maximum-strength response to any new strike. At the centre of the dispute is Pickaxe Mountain, where American officials believe, according to reports, that Tehran moved thousands of centrifuges; Iran denies any nuclear work there. With midterm elections on Tuesday, November 3, and unconfirmed reports that Gulf allies have been told to prepare for possible strikes on November 4, the next few days could decide whether this standoff cools into a negotiation or flares into war again.
