Deep in the dark ocean waters where sunlight never reaches, the vampire squid survives in a truly unique way. Its scientific name translates to the vampire squid from hell, yet it is not a dangerous predator. Instead of hunting live prey, this ancient species feeds on ocean snow, which consists of dead organic material drifting down from above.

To catch its food, the vampire squid uses two long retractor filaments covered in tiny sticky hairs. These thin threads collect drifting particles of dead plankton and fecal matter from the water column. The squid then pulls the filaments through its webbing to wipe the food into its mouth.

Living in low oxygen depths below six hundred meters, it saves energy by drifting slowly instead of swimming fast. When threatened, it can turn itself inside out, showing sharp fleshy spines called cirri to scare away predators. How do you feel about these gentle ocean drifting creatures?
