Kevin Sheehan breaks down the key negatives from the Commanders' 30-13 loss to the Colts in London. He criticizes Dan Quinn's failed 4th-and-1 attempt, early red-zone stumbles, 10 penalties, and Tress Way's sub-par punting. Sheehan also outlines the second-half defensive struggles against Jonathan Taylor and offensive line changes following Sam Cosmi's injury.

00:00All right, the bad from yesterday's 30-13 loss in London to the Colts.
00:05I would start with this.
00:08Early red zone missed opportunities.
00:10You know, you take over after the fumble at the team's 21-yard line,
00:14and almost immediately there's a TFL for minus four.
00:20And that play, sacks and big TFLs derail drives more than penalties do.
00:28Because penalties, you typically keep the down.
00:31So you don't lose the down on that spot.
00:34But losing four yards after Buckner was in the backfield to nail Kroski Merritt was a problem.
00:41And that set that drive back.
00:43And then on the other drive, that started on their own 19.
00:46You had the 35-yard pull by Mariota on the zone read.
00:51And they checked down on third and sixth to Kroski Merritt, who went for 35.
00:55But it was first and goal from the seven.
00:57And they went with two runs, right?
01:01I think they went with two runs, or maybe it was a quick screen.
01:03And then they came back with Katron Allen.
01:05Man, that was weird that they played that many running backs in the game.
01:09Four different running backs.
01:10You rarely have four running backs active in a game.
01:13They had four of them active in the game, and they all got carries.
01:17That was interesting to me.
01:19I'm not criticizing it.
01:21It's just interesting because it's very odd to see that.
01:25And then Mariota obviously got sacked on the third and goal at the Indy four-yard line, five-yard line.
01:34And that was, of course, a sack where they had some issues in protection.
01:42No doubt about that.
01:43So I would say number one on the list because if Mariota stays in the game, if he's not hurt,
01:49they obviously would have had a better chance to be in the game and potentially win the game.
01:54But we would have pointed back, if they had lost, let's just say, a 23-20 game,
01:59we would have pointed back to those first two drives and not getting at least one touchdown,
02:06being one for two in the red zone.
02:08The 0 for 2 in that spot after a takeaway and a nice long drive with your first offensive drive,
02:19second offensive drive, but your first real offensive drive that started in your own territory,
02:23that was hurtful.
02:24Number two on the list for me.
02:28This should have been number one, I guess because I did so much on it in the opening segment.
02:32The fourth and one decision flipped the game in the moment.
02:35Again, would they have won had he punted at fourth and one from his own 46-yard line
02:41with eight and a half minutes to go in the first half with a 6-0 lead
02:45against a team that had generated literally 39 yards on five offensive drives
02:51with three punts and two takeaways, two turnovers?
02:54I don't know, because you had your third-string quarterback in the game.
02:57Maybe they still lose the game, but the way to stay in it was to understand
03:01that the context of the game at that point against the Indianapolis Colts
03:06was, okay, this game has changed because we don't have Marcus Mariota in the game.
03:14We have a rookie QB, and our defense can lead us to this win against Daniel Jones
03:21and not one deep vertical threat.
03:24We can get this done, but we got to play field position.
03:28We got to make sure we don't have any self-inflicted plays or decisions,
03:34and that was a self-inflicted decision in my opinion.
03:38It's my opinion.
03:39You know, it wasn't second-guessed.
03:42I swear to God it was first-guessed, and when they came in with the tricky sub-package
03:47and gave the ball to Craig Reynolds, I mean, you got to be kidding me.
03:53And it didn't have to defensively lead to a deficit of 7-6,
04:00but when Amik Robertson was called for a 15-yard penalty on a third and 14 checkdown
04:05for five yards, which was going to bring the field goal team out for Indy,
04:10yeah, then it got to be a problem.
04:14So I think the fourth and one decision is number one.
04:19I'm flipping it around.
04:20The early red zone is number two.
04:22That was just not – I like Dan Quinn.
04:25I like that he is philosophically aggressive in fourth-down situations.
04:31It paid off for him for sure in 2024.
04:34You know why it paid off for him in 2024?
04:37Because Jaden Daniels was the quarterback.
04:41And I know that they didn't use Aethan Cali-Manus to run the football,
04:47but still, when your quarterback is a threat to run the football,
04:51it makes a big difference when you go for fourth and ones and fourth and twos
04:56because the defense has to play the quarterback as a runner.
05:01I hated that decision.
05:03I don't know what would have happened the rest of the way.
05:05None of us do.
05:06But I wanted, at that point, the defense to go back out onto the field
05:11against Daniel Jones from his own seven-yard line.
05:15Hopefully, Tress would have pinned him deep.
05:17He had a rough day.
05:20The penalties are on my list for sure because it was 10-1.
05:27Now, I don't think it should have been 10-1,
05:30but the penalties on the special teams cost them, I think, 37 yards in field position.
05:38I'll go back and check that.
05:40That was a back-of-the-envelope quick math exercise.
05:44But they were hurtful.
05:45Three special teams penalties on the day.
05:49The big return by Jalen Lane before he got hurt that got him out to the 41-yard line,
05:54that came back to the 20.
05:56That was a 21-yard field flip because of a penalty to begin with.
06:00Now, I didn't go in and look closely at whether or not those were good calls or not.
06:05But the penalties clearly hurt.
06:07When you are, you know, minus 79 yards in penalty yardage difference,
06:14that's going to be a factor in the game.
06:18I've already mentioned the referees.
06:20No, I'm not blaming the referees for the loss.
06:22I am blaming some of those calls for a game that was 30-13.
06:27The game would have been a much closer game had some of those penalties
06:32either not been called or a flag not been picked up.
06:37And the Amik Robertson thing is absurd.
06:42Second-half defense run-stopping.
06:45The bottom line is they really, in the second half, you know,
06:50and that could have been because the score didn't get sideways to be fair until the fourth quarter.
06:55It was 20-13, and Washington had the ball going into the fourth quarter.
07:00But the defense ended up giving up, you know, after the turnover,
07:04they gave up the touchdown to start the second half.
07:07Then after a short kickoff return that was brought out to Washington's 30 – I'm sorry,
07:18the kickoff return out to the 37-yard line by McGowan, I think.
07:24They got into field goal range.
07:27Then it was touchdown field goal.
07:30So four out of five drives they scored on.
07:32And Jonathan Taylor was the major figure.
07:34You had to know that Taylor, a heavy dose of Taylor, was coming in the second half
07:39because he only had seven carries, I think, in the first half.
07:44Seven in the first half, had 13 in the second half for 60-something yards,
07:49averaged 4.8 yards per carry in the game, had two touchdown runs.
07:54And he was tough to get down.
07:58And there were some holes.
07:59I wouldn't put it on the tackling.
08:01I think the defense just got worn down, ultimately, in the football game.
08:06You know, the Colts ended up, you know, dominating sort of time of possession
08:12in the second half of that game.
08:15And he got on a roll.
08:16So the defense didn't do a great job stopping the run in the second half
08:20and keeping them in it.
08:21You know, because the score was 10-6, then it was 17-6, all right,
08:26after the turnover early in the second half.
08:28But then you get the big one to Burks, and all of a sudden, you know, it's 17-13.
08:34You hold him to a field goal.
08:35You had two chances with the ball down seven.
08:39But then touchdown drive, field goal drive, game over.
08:45What else is on my list of bad?
08:48Tressway had a brutal day, man, for him.
08:50I mean, I don't think I've ever said this about Tressway.
08:53He had a bad day punting the football.
08:56Even the punts inside the 20, one of them was barely inside the 20 on a short field.
09:01Average 37.8 yards per punt.
09:04Sometimes that can be because you're punting from midfield,
09:07but he wasn't punting from midfield the entire day.
09:12And then lastly, I'm just – we're going to talk about this,
09:17and I know this is coming in a lot of the calls, okay, I –
09:22Gulbin for Allegretti because of Cosme's loss
09:27and Lucas Patrick's ascension to being able to play center better than Allegretti.
09:32Yes, we can harp on all of the offseason stuff,
09:36and it's totally justifiable to say why did you think Nick Gallagretti
09:42was so much better than Biotis and you were comfortable with that.
09:47Well, A, he wasn't plan A.
09:49He was probably plan B.
09:50And you know what?
09:51It really is looking like they should have paid Tyler Linderbaum more than the Raiders
09:55because he is exceptional for the Raiders.
09:59And again, I'll go back to what I said at the time.
10:01It's not about the center position.
10:03It's about adding another A-plus offensive lineman
10:07to a line that already has an A-plus player in Tunsell
10:11and has an A-player in Cosme.
10:13You know, add another A-plus player.
10:16Have three A-level players on your offensive line.
10:19Who cares if one of them is a center and is being overpaid,
10:22especially since you don't have an answer at center.
10:26They didn't think that Allegretti was going to stink,
10:29and they'll probably tell you right now
10:32that they're still okay if they have to play him at center,
10:37you know, because of his communication ability.
10:39But they started Patrick.
10:40They sat Allegretti yesterday.
10:43There was some conversation after the game that maybe he wasn't 100%.
10:46They went with the rookie, Gulbin.
10:48And Gulbin, I think, had an average day.
10:51He obviously had a couple of big, highlighted, bad moments.
10:56But the bottom line is, as when it comes to this offensive line, people, okay,
11:02quarterback matters.
11:05Quarterback matters when it comes to pass block win rate.
11:09It matters when it comes to sacks and pressure.
11:14Quarterback matters.
11:16Pass block win rate is just an offensive line stat.
11:19Through two weeks, they were top 10 in the league.
11:23Now, they have stepped back from that the last two weeks,
11:27in part because they played Seattle, and there were a lot of pressures.
11:31All right?
11:32I am not going to sit here and say that the season is lost
11:37because the offensive line stinks.
11:40No.
11:41Cosme hopefully will be back.
11:43Your starting quarterback matters in pass pressure.
11:47He'll be back.
11:48That's a big deal.
11:50Huge deal.
11:51You're not going to get Tunsil back.
11:53But their plan going into the season, there was one area of question mark.
11:58One.
11:58And that was at center.
12:00They had an all-pro left tackle.
12:03They had a guard who was potentially an all-pro in Cosme.
12:08And I'll tell you what, in Brandon Coleman, they have a legit starter
12:11at perhaps multiple positions.
12:14And then they've got a guy in Connerly Jr.
12:17who came on at the end of his rookie year and could potentially be an outstanding right tackle.
12:23The area of conversation should be focused on they messed up at center.
12:29That's fair.
12:30To say that they messed up with the offensive line is ludicrous.
12:35And to say that their season is over because of the offensive line,
12:40they didn't have their offensive line out there yesterday.
12:43You don't think Cosme matters?
12:45You don't think the quarterback matters?
12:49Do you know which team has the second-fewest sacks allowed in the NFL?
12:55Washington.
12:59All right.
13:00Some other observations.
13:02It wasn't great yesterday in key spots, no doubt.
13:06I love the spin move by AK.
13:10When he ran.
13:12And he spun, I think, about 12 yards too early, but it looked good.
13:17We'll do this confusion.
13:17trips toOpsίν.
13:17You notice that he frame as well?
13:17Bye.
13:17Will you unfortuner at the top of this model?
13:17Come on.
