00:03I had my first story published when I was like 11. It was called Lizard's Problem with Girls. Isn't that
00:09cute?
00:13Well, I always wanted to be an editor and a writer. As a child I was always writing stories and
00:17I was always designing my own magazines by cutting up magazines and construction paper and just like creating these books
00:22for myself.
00:23But I always sort of felt like traditional corporate cultures just wasn't really my thing. There's not enough people kind
00:29of challenging those rules and those conventions.
00:31Being entrepreneurial and doing something that felt personal and that felt new and that felt needed was always something that
00:40was exciting to me.
00:41When the prospect of Refinery29 emerged, it really felt like an opportunity I didn't want to pass up.
00:48Walking over the bridge every morning is really, it's not so much about exercise, it's about this opportunity to just
00:52like clear my head.
00:53Any person that works in a fast-paced creative environment, it's like you really never know when inspiration is going
00:58to strike.
00:58And, you know, even just last week when I was walking over the bridge, I had this idea about, you
01:03know, something I wanted to put into this presentation that I was giving.
01:06And it was really spontaneous, but I immediately stopped on the bridge and just like, you know, sort of typed
01:10it into my phone and shot it off.
01:11By the time I got to the office, it was already in the presentation. And I think technology really allows
01:15us to do that.
01:16It allows us to take these like really raw ideas, transform them quickly into something special and unique to our
01:22site and something that we really feel like is unique and a value to our readers.
01:26And getting it up on the homepage as quickly as possible.
01:29You know, I like being spontaneous. I like being able to just sort of respond to these creative impulses that
01:35I have.
01:36And also be able to drill things down to this just like beautiful, awesome, amazing piece of content.
01:42That thrill like never goes away.
01:43It also brings a lot of joy to my life to see all of our editors and writers feeling incredibly
01:48gratified by that too.
01:49It's something that really unifies our team and I think it makes everybody feel like they are a part of
01:54something that is bigger than themselves.
01:56I'm really humbled by all of the incredible creativity around us every day.
02:01And I just feel like I'm constantly learning.
02:03I just think that it's really important to take chances and to take risks and to try new things.
02:08It's really the only way that you grow and evolve.
02:11My name is Christine Barbrick and I'm the editor-in-chief of Refinery29.
