First love hurts. Coco came out as gay when she started dating her now ex-girlfriend, Christina, whom she met over Tumblr. What followed is an incredibly powerful story of love, loss, and coming out of the closet.

00:00I graduated from high school and was just like generally unhappy for a really long time
00:05and I like couldn't figure out why.
00:06And I literally woke up one day and was like, oh my god, I'm gay.
00:14Dating a girl was sort of just like an out-of-reach thing for me until I started talking to
00:22Christina.
00:23I met her on Tumblr.
00:26We would Skype for like 12 hours.
00:29We didn't really get to see each other physically until like four or five months.
00:34I knew I had something good when I found it, so I saved up some money and bought a ticket
00:40to go see her.
00:41We were both what we needed at the time.
00:44That was a really formative year for myself personally because I had gotten really, really
00:49sick and I spent all of January in Louisiana with her and she just like took care of me
00:56the entire time.
00:57To have somebody taking care of you when you're at your most like vulnerable self, it's like
01:05invaluable.
01:06We'd been feeling sort of distant from each other and one day she just called me and was
01:10like, we need to talk.
01:11And she was just talking about how she was so nervous about, you know, being young and
01:16being tied down.
01:18And I was like, okay, well, can I come see you and flew to New Orleans the next day and
01:24we broke up.
01:26Like that was the end of the story.
01:28The first conversation you're like, oh, we'll still talk to each other.
01:32It's still, it's still okay.
01:33You'll still be in my life.
01:34It doesn't pan out like that.
01:36After I left, I was sad, but I didn't know how to express my feelings.
01:40I just sort of let them marinate.
01:42I ate a lot of chicken wings and listened to a lot of Beach House.
01:47We talk like normal for the longest time.
01:49We talk like we're still very involved with each other's lives.
01:54And you can't do that when you break up with someone.
01:55You can't go straight from being in a serious relationship to best friends.
01:59I had to have a talk where I was like, hey, you need a chill.
02:04Now we're okay.
02:05Now we've gone our separate ways.
02:08I wouldn't change anything because if I changed anything, then I wouldn't have learned what
02:13I learned.
02:13It's like the best way to learn about yourself is to be with somebody else.
02:18Don't be afraid to, don't be afraid to fall in love.
02:24That's really cliche, but it's true.
