00:00Hi, I'm Eli. I'm Danielle. And this is Ellie. And welcome to our Sweet Dig. Come on in.
00:12You may remember us from previous Sweet Digs where we showed you our first rental property,
00:16the greenhouse. But today we're showing you our new one. It's called the Barn House. It's also
00:21located in the Catskills, about two hours north of New York City. We paid $235,000 for this house
00:27and ended up putting in about $50,000 over the course of seven months. It has four bedrooms and
00:33three bathrooms and took us about seven months to fully get renovated. We lived here full-time
00:39for the last four of us. I work from home as a software consultant. And I'm a dermatology physician
00:45assistant in Manhattan. This house was actually built in 1845 as a hay barn and then converted
00:51in the 1950s into a residence. We weren't sure exactly what we were getting ourselves into
00:56at first. It just needed so much work, but it also had so much character. We just couldn't
01:01pass it up. These beams you see here are actually about 175 years old.
01:07This is the living room. One of the biggest changes we made to this room specifically were
01:13the addition of all these windows, which just brings in so much more natural light. If you've
01:18seen our first house, you know we really love plants and a good plant wall especially. It may
01:22not be the easiest thing to water, but we just really love what it brings to the space. This
01:28is our record area here. Music has always been such a big part of how we like to relax and
01:33enjoy the house. We've had a bunch of these Marshall speakers and linked them so you can
01:37hear music wherever you are in the house. We knew we'd want a hanging chair and a lot of
01:42really comfortable places to sit to just relax with a book or enjoy music.
01:50Welcome to our kitchen. I think the biggest find was this cast iron farmhouse sink that
01:56we found on Craigslist. We built this wood base for it and had it refinished and it looks brand new.
02:01One of our favorite things in the house and maybe the biggest splurge is this range from
02:06Cafe appliances. It's matte white with brass detailing, amazing to look at and it's just
02:12really fun to cook on. I think this is probably the DIY project that we're most proud of. We
02:18actually built these wood cabinets and countertops as well. The bases are out of 2x4s and 4x4s
02:25that we notched out and the countertops are out of plywood. We sanded everything down, stained
02:30it, and then polyed it. We are definitely not professional cabinet makers, but we really love
02:36how they turned out. I think the biggest challenge during renovation was probably that our daughter
02:41Ellie was about 10 months old when we started. And we had to plan the renovation around her
02:45schedule. Luckily each of us have kind of our specialties, so typically when one of us
02:51is working, the other one is with her. Over here we have the dining nook, which started
02:57off as a pretty awkward space, but we ended up building this custom-made bench and table because
03:02we love to entertain and we wanted a really intimate space for people to sit around and
03:06eat dinner together. We chose this pendant light from Hudson Valley, which I feel like
03:11really compliments the space well. And these vases here are from Allison Samuels over at
03:16Two Tree Studios. Now I'll show you my favorite room in the house, the room that we call bedroom
03:22four. This room actually used to be a workshop in the house and the previous owners kind of used
03:30it as a walk-through, but we knew we wanted to do something really special and make it an extra
03:34bedroom.
03:35During the first half of renovations, this space was actually our workshop. So we had our miter
03:40saw set up, all of our tools. It was covered in sawdust, so it's really fun to see how far
03:45we've come.
03:46My favorite part of this room is the custom tile that we designed with fire clay tile. There's a hint
03:52of blush,
03:53a pop of this mustard yellow color, and it's just such a statement for the space.
03:59When we decided to make this a bedroom, we knew we would need a door for privacy, but the challenge
04:04was finding a door that was big enough to fill the space. So we ended up making this barn door
04:09and
04:10I feel like it complements the space really well. And here's our loft. We knew we didn't want a TV
04:16in the
04:17downstairs main living area, so we decided to create this cozy place for movie nights. It was hard
04:22finding a couch that would actually fill the space, so we ended up finding this one from West Elm called
04:27The Andes, which is probably the most comfortable couch in the world. In here we have the hall bath.
04:33We removed and replaced all of this wallpaper with beautiful floral pattern by Anthropologie,
04:40and we put in the biggest mirror we could find. In this bathroom we also went with fire clay tile
04:46and decided to do this pretty cool two-tone pattern. We added this brass rainfall shower, which I just love.
04:53This is the second bedroom, which I feel like has such cool details. I really love this pendant light
04:59that we chose by Hudson Valley. And actually the entire house has the linen line by Parachute,
05:04which I think is just so soft and sophisticated. For this bedroom we wanted to do something a little bit
05:11different,
05:12so we filled all of these West Elm frames that we love. Now let's go to the main bedroom.
05:18I love these windows. They're actually original. We were really lucky we didn't have to change them at all.
05:23The light that comes through here during the day is just amazing. In here we have the en-suite bathroom.
05:29This clawfoot tub actually used to be bright red when we bought the house, and we sanded it down,
05:34refinished it, this beautiful naked clay color. We added a ton of wood, and added this window as well.
05:41And I think it's just the serene space for a perfect bath.
05:49One of our favorite things about this house is the outdoor space. We have a hot tub, a big outdoor
05:55farm table,
05:56and a huge field for lawn games. We love to cook and entertain, and although we have a Weber grill,
06:01there's something to be said about cooking over a real wood fire, so we built this outdoor hearth.
06:06We bought 500 bricks and ended up using every single one to complete it.
06:13This is our fire pit area. We actually built the fire pit from rocks we found around the property.
06:19We knew we wanted a lot of seating, but add-around deck chairs are so expensive,
06:22so we actually ended up building these ourselves.
06:27We're so proud of how the house turned out, and we can't wait to share it with friends and family,
06:32and Airbnb guests for many years to come.
06:36Thanks for stopping by, but I have to go. It's time for dinner.
06:40See you later.
