00:00Today I'm most nervous about the color.
00:03I have really brittle hair.
00:06Despite the fact that I never apply heat to it,
00:08I just feel like it's really sensitive.
00:10I'm afraid to have it burned or, you know,
00:12permanently damaged in any way.
00:14Hi, I'm Lisa.
00:16Today I'm at Heroin Salon getting a sun-kissed balayage
00:18and a shaggy fringe.
00:19Growing up, my parents had no idea what
00:20to do with my curly hair.
00:21They themselves do not have curly hair,
00:23so they used to try to brush it and blow-dry it every morning,
00:25and I was just completely unaware of what
00:27to do with my natural hair texture.
00:29In college, I used to do a lot of different colors
00:31and straighten it, and then I decided as soon as I graduated
00:33that I really wanted to see what my natural hair looks like.
00:36So I shaved everything off, I had the tiniest little pixie cut,
00:39and I just started growing it from scratch.
00:40And this is four and a half years of progress since then.
00:44I'm going for that sun-kissed look to kind of give the appearance
00:47that I'd left my apartment this summer
00:48when we've all been sitting inside.
00:50I'm also getting some layers and a light fringe.
00:53Right now I'm at a really triangular shape with my curly hair,
00:55and I'd really wanted to have a little bit of lift
00:57and bring out my curly texture.
01:00I'm Sarah Louise, and I'm a stylist at Heroin Salon in New York City.
01:04It's just a little heavy.
01:06I feel like it's, like, bringing you down.
01:08I definitely think you need some layers up in here
01:11so it gives it more of a defined shape.
01:13And then after your color is all finished,
01:15I'll go back in on wet hair and kind of texturize it,
01:17and then we'll kind of pick out those shorter pieces around your face.
01:21Perfect. I'm good? Yeah.
01:22Awesome. Let's get started. Let's do it.
01:27First, I'm going to go in with shears
01:28and put a general foundation in her hair
01:30just so that Michelle can see what the cut consists of
01:34when she goes in with the color.
01:35And then I'm going to keep the length
01:36by just trimming up the ends a little bit,
01:38and we're going to be doing this cut mostly dry.
01:41I wear my hair back every single day
01:43because it's such a triangular, odd shape
01:45that I've run out of ideas of what to do with it.
01:48I get my hair cut once a year out of necessity
01:50just to get rid of the dead ends,
01:52but I've never actually had, like, a good shape or layering that I've liked.
01:57Everything has just been, like, a maintenance.
01:59So this will be, like, my first, like, big girl cut.
02:05Hi, my name's Michelle, and I'm a master stylist here
02:07at Hair and Salon in New York City.
02:09So today I will be foiling her and hair painting.
02:12The first thing we're going to do is mix our liner.
02:15We're using Short Cough Lawn Me with Six Volume Developer.
02:18We're going to do a full foil on her starting at the back.
02:21We're going to do some fine sections.
02:23Once the foils are in her hair, we're going to go back in and balayage the ends.
02:30I'm excited to feel like I have some control over the shape and color of my hair
02:34when right now everything feels like a waiting game.
02:37Normally the summer is a time when we all pop off
02:40and do all the outdoor activities and kind of get them all in.
02:43Obviously the summer was different.
02:44I've been inside for most of it.
02:46So I really want to give the illusion that I was in the sun, on a boat,
02:49living my best life, surrounded by people and friends,
02:52just, like, soaking up all of that vitamin D.
02:57When she has processed, we're going to remove all the foils,
03:00rinse out the balayage that we have hair painted onto her,
03:03and we're going to tone her hair.
03:06We're also going to do a root shadow on it today,
03:08just so it has a really nice blend and softness throughout it.
03:12It's going to look amazing on her.
03:14She's got beautiful curls.
03:15It's just going to accentuate her curls a little bit more,
03:17give her some dimension, and brighten her up.
03:25Right after the color is finished,
03:27I'm going to go in with a razor and kind of break up that cut,
03:30make it not so structured.
03:31And then after it's all dried, I'm going to take my shears
03:34and cut a few fringe face framing pieces
03:36to really bring out her eyes.
03:39I think it's going to give her all the volume around her face
03:42and around her head that she needs.
03:45Right now it's just really long and it's weighing her down,
03:47so I just wanted to brighten her up.
03:55All right, are you ready to see it?
03:57Let's do it.
04:01Oh my god, it looks so great.
04:03I love it, it's exactly what I wanted.
04:23I love it so much, it really looks like I was in the sun all summer,
04:26not hiding in my apartment.
04:28Thank you so much.
04:29Oh my god, of course.
04:30Very well done.
04:32I love it so much.
04:34It's basically exactly what I wanted.
04:36It looks super natural and I love all these short pieces in the front.
04:40I feel like they're really fun.
04:41They're going to give my face a little bit of dimension.
04:44And I guess it's one step closer to a full fringe.
04:48Now that I actually have layers and my hair looks really healthy and styled in the back,
04:52I might actually start wearing it down instead of just pinning it back every day.
04:56And when I gosto of seeing some potatoes at the front, theShot Bagano, enjoying it.
04:59I'm unbelievable.
04:59You
