Living in Forest Hills, Queens means a little more space for a little less money. Alicia and Kendra show how they're inspired by their home and each other on Sweet Digs.
Transcript
00:00Hi, I'm Alicia.
00:01Hi, I'm Kendra.
00:02Welcome to our sweet digs in mini Manhattan.
00:04Also known as Forest Hills, Queens.
00:06Great, come on in.
00:10Our rent is currently $2,100.
00:13I pay a little bit more because I have a bigger room.
00:15So it's about $100,000 for her and a little bit over for me.
00:19We kind of think the rent is good for the city.
00:23The advantage of living in this neighborhood is that you can get to the city really easy
00:28and you can kind of get away from the city.
00:30It's very comfortable in that sense.
00:32So there's a little bit of peace here in Queens.
00:34And there's parking.
00:41One of my favorite pieces in the house is a painting that my niece drew when she was little.
00:47It was one of her first paintings that she did for her Etsy shop.
00:50She has such an entrepreneurial spirit at a young age.
00:53I borrowed it until it sells.
00:56At least it was cheaper.
00:57Welcome to our kitchen.
00:59This used to be my least favorite place but I've grown to love it the more I practice cooking.
01:03My by far favorite is fried chicken.
01:06Recently I discovered a new recipe by adding a little bit of lemon to the dough and it's so good.
01:13I recently became a vegetarian so I don't get to have the fried chicken.
01:17One of my favorite dishes is, it's called chana.
01:19It's from Guyana.
01:20You just mix a whole bunch of chickpeas with like different spices.
01:25And if we're lazy we just order chana.
01:27Welcome to our living room.
01:29One of my most favorite places in the house.
01:31We're actually both cousins and we live together but we also work together.
01:35This is actually both our first time living away from our parents.
01:39Having each other made it easier since we were best friends growing up as well.
01:42We both work at a start up company.
01:45I'm a founding partner at the company.
01:47I do customer experience.
01:49It's kind of fun working with Alicia.
01:51Alicia's boyfriend once surprised us and hung up these really cool lights.
01:55And it really made the apartment seem warm.
01:57At night when you turn everything off it's just very peaceful, very calming.
02:01We've turned this wall into our vision board.
02:03We just wanted to make some changes in our lives and just like start putting our dreams on paper.
02:08A really close friend of my boyfriend's was signed to the Patriots a few years ago.
02:13And he wanted to get re-signed and we rolled it on the board and then he got re-signed
02:17to a new team.
02:18So I want to have a daughter and I want to name her Noah.
02:21So I put her name on here.
02:23One day you're going to meet Noah.
02:24And this is our inspiration board.
02:26All of these quotes have been added because of something that maybe we were going through.
02:30Proceed and be bold.
02:31We were nervous about something that was happening at work.
02:34And we wrote this down and the next day we went in.
02:37Power Woman.
02:38This is one of my talk pieces in the apartment.
02:41It's a case that my sister had found at a warehouse.
02:44She realized that it was actually one of Jim Hance's cases.
02:47There was foam inside and then when we looked closely we realized that it was an imprint of Cookie Monster.
02:53The case itself is amazing.
02:56I love it.
02:57Cookie Monster was always my favorite.
02:59I think because I couldn't eat cookies when I was younger.
03:02But at her house I ate cookies.
03:04This is the bathroom.
03:05Kendra's most important thing when we were apartment hunting was that the bathroom be all white.
03:10She has a pet peeve with bathrooms being dirty.
03:12Overall I let her take care of this space.
03:14I don't like it when water is on the sink.
03:17Like after you use it you should wipe it off.
03:20She wakes up a little bit earlier than me so she gets in the bathroom prior and she puts on
03:25her makeup and then I come in.
03:27When it came to my bedroom the most important requirement for me when we were getting the apartment was that
03:32I was able to fit a queen size bed into it with additional space for additional furniture.
03:37I guess the primary reason I ended up in the bigger room was that I have a boyfriend and he
03:42comes over a lot so I wanted to make sure that I had a space and we didn't disturb Kendra
03:47as much.
03:47These thrones were made by my dad when I first opened up a princess themed nail salon.
03:52The thrones fit little girls ages 3 to 9.
03:56The whole theme behind the Delilah Soleil is that you dress up as a princess while you're getting your nails
04:01done.
04:02I got a loft bed.
04:03I was inspired by like higher ceilings and underneath I can read and have my own space.
04:09And also up here it's really tiny and I like little cubbies and stuff like that.
04:14It's a little more playful with a loft bed.
04:16I really wanted to make a refurbished panel bookshelf.
04:21It's probably my favorite piece in the room.
04:22So I have a tree stump as my night table and then I also have a branch here.
04:28It holds my clothes up.
04:29I would describe my home style as modern.
04:32I think Kendra's is more southern.
04:35My home style is a little artsy and I grab things from everywhere and anywhere.
04:41But not southern I don't think so either.
04:43I think the best thing about living with Alicia is the ease.
04:49We've been with each other through like the hardest times of like growing up so like moving is such a
04:54hard thing.
04:56Like getting a career I think this is like my first real real job and I was able to do
05:00it with Alicia.
05:01I'm so used to her.
05:02I don't feel like I left home.
05:05So this place doesn't feel abnormal.
05:08It feels like right, like perfect.
05:10To be perfect.
05:11To be perfect.
05:11To be perfect.
05:14And it feels like yeah.
05:14Gilder.
