Discharge is completely normal for everyone who has a vagina. So why don't people want to talk about it?
Transcript
00:00Discharge. Discharge. Discharge.
00:02It's really gross.
00:03One of the first words that comes to my head.
00:05Cloudy. Clear most of the time.
00:07Kind of opaque. Milky-ish.
00:09And sticky and then crusty.
00:11Little, little bitty eggs coming out.
00:13It looks like we have boogers in our underpants.
00:15It's not like sexual lubrication, but it's definitely wet.
00:20Lady juices.
00:20Of course I have discharge. I have a vagina, don't I?
00:26Let's just start off by saying that vaginal discharge is a part of life.
00:30People with vaginas see some weird gushy stuff in their underwear at the end of, like, every day.
00:34We're here to figure out what exactly discharge is and why it's so taboo.
00:40I think discharge is just my vagina lubing itself up for later.
00:45I don't know scientifically what it is.
00:47What is this white stuff coming out of me?
00:49I'm still very confused about what it is.
00:51There are a lot of times where I sort of just think that I'm slowly leaking pee all day long.
00:56And I'm not sure if, um, if I should see a doctor.
01:00Discharge is when the glands of your cervix create a mucus that drains downward and out of your vagina.
01:07Okay, so it's just mucus. That's, that's sexy. That's what we all go for.
01:10It is your body's way of cleaning itself.
01:13Oh, that makes a lot more sense.
01:16Anyways, mucus, huh?
01:18Even with experience and age, this is a topic that people don't really know about and don't want to talk
01:22about.
01:23Until I was in college, it always seemed like, well, if no one else is talking about it, it must
01:27not be a thing that we talk about.
01:29I'm 26 now and literally the very first time I talked about discharge was last year.
01:35I believe women feel ashamed about discharge because they probably don't understand how important it is.
01:39My friends and I do not talk about discharge. I'm personally still incredibly uncomfortable talking about it.
01:44Part of the reason discharge is so taboo is because it goes against the societal expectations of women and what
01:50they should be like down there.
01:51I think there is something in society and especially culturally that tells us as women to be more modest and
01:59maybe a little bit more conservative.
02:01There is totally pressure put on women to have a dry zone down here.
02:06And not only dry in the sense of no discharge or no period, but also no hair.
02:11People want it to just be this like bare little V that's just there.
02:15Usually my boyfriend is down for all things vagina, but with this, he was like, okay, I've had enough.
02:22I think I had seen it like on panties. I had seen like stuff.
02:26I always thought to myself like, oh, I guess I must have made her pretty aroused to get all those
02:31juices flowing.
02:32And then I learned later had nothing to do with me. So that hurt my feelings.
02:36It is something that every woman has.
02:38Discharge is normal. Your vagina is a self-cleaning organism and discharge is a part of that cleaning.
02:45So God bless my discharge.
02:47Beyonce has discharge. Ariana Grande has discharge. Selena Gomez has discharge.
02:53Everything with a vagina has discharge.
02:56My discharge doesn't smell.
02:58It totally should not smell. So if it does get that checked out.
03:01If the color is like green or like yellow or something, red even,
03:06probably want to get it checked out by a doctor.
03:09If you experience discharge for the first time, just know that your body is healthy and it's working
03:14and that your vagina loves you no matter what.
03:17You know, our vaginas are pretty amazing. They are self-cleaning.
03:23You don't need to spray anything scented on them.
03:27Do not douche because that is going to mess up your internal system.
03:33After we get past the taboo nature of it, people seem to open up about it and share their own
03:39stories,
03:40which makes me feel great.
03:41Discharge is completely normal.
03:43But if you see a change in color and texture in your underwear,
03:47you might want to go see a medical professional just to make sure everything's okay.
03:51See you next time.
