Why do you sometimes smell when you sweat? Lucie talks to Dr. Mike on this episode of The Fink Tank to learn how sweat glands work.
Transcript
00:04Oh
00:18Guys, can I have somebody come on set and smell me? I need to know if I smell okay. Oh,
00:24give me a give me a sniff
00:25Lucy not good not good. Sorry
00:30I'm Lucy Fink. You're actually Lucy stink. And this is the Fink Tank. The Stink Tank!
00:38Smelly armpits are not uncommon. Actually most of us have experienced this at some point in our lives probably very
00:44embarrassingly
00:45But sometimes I sweat and I don't smell at all whereas sometimes I sweat and I do smell like right
00:51now
00:51I'm curious to know what the difference is between these two types of sweat and what actually happens when we
00:56experience
00:57armpit body odor. But first I need to take a little pit stop
01:02And quickly slide into the Instagram DMs of my good old friend, Dr. Mike
01:13Welcome to the Fink Tank! The one, the only, Dr. Mike!
01:17Oh, what's that smell?
01:18Oh, sorry. I have a problem Dr. Mike.
01:21You know, there's a scientific reason why our pits smell sometimes. You got two sweat glands in your body. The
01:26eccrine sweat glands and the apricrine sweat glands.
01:29Eccrine?
01:30Yes.
01:30Apricrine.
01:31Boom. You got it.
01:32Boom!
01:32You have eccrine sweat glands pretty much all across your body. Those are the ones that release sweat, mostly salty,
01:38watery sweat when you exercise.
01:40That generally doesn't smell that type of sweat.
01:42Sometimes, during moments of stress, you also release the apricrine sweat glands.
01:48Those sweat glands have a sweat that has more protein in them, some nutrients in there, and those nutrients get
01:55eaten up by the bacteria that naturally lives on top of your body.
01:58And then that bacteria basically farts or burps, whatever you want to call it, and releases that nasty odor.
02:04And it's important to know, not all of the bacteria do that. There's up to a hundred different types of
02:09bacteria living on you.
02:10Gosh. What would happen if you washed your body so well that you just didn't have as many bacteria?
02:17So that's actually what deodorant and antiperspirant tries to do. Deodorant. It's mostly perfume with a little bit of added
02:24alcohol to kill some of that bacteria.
02:26Now, antiperspirant is really interesting. It basically plugs your sweat glands and doesn't allow the sweat to come out. There's
02:32no bacteria farts as a result.
02:34I feel like I've learned a lot right now about these tiny micro-bacterias that I can't see.
02:39I'd actually love to do a demonstration to help show, physically, what this release process looks like.
02:47Yeah.
02:48We got sugar. We got yeast. We got water in a bottle and a...
02:53Balloon.
02:54And it's a yellow balloon.
02:55I'm going to take seven heaping spoonfuls of yeast, drop it into the warm water.
02:59Yes.
03:00Then we're going to add ten spoonfuls of sugar to feed the yeast.
03:03Yes.
03:04Hopefully, the yeast will bite onto the sugar and then fart out the gas.
03:09Go yeast. Go yeast.
03:11Alright, am I doing this right?
03:12I think you should take a shot.
03:13I feel the metabolism of the yeast, and what the yeast is doing is it's fermenting the sugar, and as
03:19a byproduct, it's going to release air, and that air should hopefully fill up our balloon here.
03:24And this right here, remember, folks, is a metaphor for the armpit.
03:28Look, it's happening.
03:29It's happening. It's working.
03:31Look at that. Feel how firm that is.
03:33A firm balloon.
03:35Eee-ee.
03:36So, remember, it's not the sweat that smells. It's the bacteria eating the sweat and then releasing the byproduct.
03:41Dr. Mike, any minute this is going to go over the top.
03:44What's happening now is we've fed the yeast so much sugar that it's currently rising out of the bottle and
03:51filling the balloon.
03:51Just use this as protection.
03:53Yeah, this is our shield.
03:54Because it will explode.
03:56Alright, Dr. Mike, here are my final takeaways from this armpit experiment.
04:00Inside of our bodies, we have two types of sweat glands, ecrine and apricrine.
04:04Boom.
04:05Ecrine sweat glands are what kicks into action when we're at the gym and we're getting super sweaty.
04:09Apricrine sweat glands kick into action when we are stressed and we're a little bit nervous about something and we
04:15start to sweat rapidly and it's really stinky.
04:18Yes, in our armpits and our groin.
04:20Let's turn this so it faces you.
04:22Don't forget to follow Dr. Mike on Instagram at Dr. Mike.
