We‘ve all had that moment when we're running really late for a big meeting or when we look at the low number in our bank accounts a few days before rent is due. It also happens to be the same moment we ask ourselves, Is that smell coming from me? News flash: Stress sweat is different from regular sweat in that it feeds off bacteria and causes odor. Then we start to think about that — producing more sweat. Great.

00:00Sweat.
00:02It's perfectly expected when you're
00:05slaying a dance class,
00:06running down a pier,
00:08earning some extra money as a sports mascot,
00:11evading a giant prehistoric hyena.
00:16But sweat and odor are a little less welcome
00:19when they creep into a climate-controlled space, like...
00:22Right before your high-stakes change your life,
00:27all or nothing,
00:28make it or break it!
00:29Don't fake it, just space it!
00:31Do, do, go!
00:33Promotion meeting.
00:38But did you know that these two types of sweat
00:40are fundamentally different?
00:41That hot summer day sweat comes from the ecraine glands.
00:45They're located all over your body,
00:46and they regulate temperature by releasing moisture
00:49to cool your skin.
00:50On the flip side,
00:51stress sweat comes from the apocrine glands.
00:53They're located primarily under your arms.
00:56There are few in your groin area,
00:57and strangely, your inner ear.
00:59The main difference is that stress sweat smells
01:02way worse than activity sweat.
01:04Huh?
01:05Activity sweat doesn't really smell at all.
01:08And that's because activity sweat is 99% water,
01:11whereas stress sweat is 80% water,
01:1420% proteins and lipids.
01:16When you stress sweat,
01:17bacteria feed on those proteins and lipids,
01:20and release odor as a waste product.
01:22Stress sweat is the result of anxiety that used to work
01:25to keep us safe.
01:27Back in the day.
01:28Like literally a million years ago.
01:30Our ancestors developed a fight-or-flight response system
01:33to stay safe from danger.
01:35Like this cave bear.
01:36Part of that reaction was stress sweat,
01:38with an olfactory potency that might have been used
01:41to repulse predators and signal danger to our kinfolk.
01:45But now our daily stressors are more like this.
01:49Hey Jackie, come on in.
01:51We still have the same evolutionarily derived
01:54physiological responses to stress stimuli,
01:57but not a lot of use for them.
01:58Weird, huh?
02:01Congrats on the promotion.
02:03Keep up the good work.
02:05We young women are one of the most stressed out demographics.
02:09We sweat it out over money, work, family, our social lives.
02:13So when you stress sweat, you're absolutely not alone.
02:17If you're already stress sweating,
02:18worrying about it just makes you sweat more.
02:21More importantly, if you find yourself experiencing stress sweat,
02:24know that nothing's wrong with you.
02:25Body chemistry varies from person to person.
02:28And I'm sure if you went back in time,
02:30you'd protect the heck out of some young.
02:37Stay healthy.
