00:00Oh my god, I'd be cringing if she was.
00:01We both had to watch it together.
00:03She'd go, oh, I would certainly never like that.
00:09Darker, deeper, rauncher.
00:18Well, there's two.
00:19Tony proposes to her, and it just felt like a really big moment
00:21because, you know, her marriage has been a big point of contention
00:24in the series.
00:25Finally, the man that she really wants to,
00:27and she's been with him for two years,
00:28and she's been waiting, and she kind of proposes to him
00:31and gets rejected that when he actually does it to her,
00:33it was a big moment for us.
00:35The other one was one of the last scenes in episode seven
00:37where Margaret sits down and finally asks the final permission
00:40to announce the engagement.
00:42It was, and we were shooting it like three months before,
00:44but one of the lights went through the building
00:47because of the wind.
00:48It was like really windy.
00:49And so weirdly, that scene got put right to the end,
00:51and it was great because we did the whole season
00:53and then ended on that scene
00:55because Margaret had been talking about Margaret's men
00:58in her life.
00:59It suddenly became really clear how much they'd grown up.
01:01It was like a deja vu, but also very poignant,
01:03and both Claire and I were like,
01:04have we said this before?
01:10In the beginning, I couldn't read beyond 1955,
01:14so I'd get all these biographies, and I'd read up to 55,
01:16because if I read past that, I didn't want to know what happened.
01:19I just wanted to focus on, like,
01:20I ordered every book I could find,
01:22and there were, like, super scholarly ones,
01:24and then more sort of raunchy news of the world ones,
01:26which I loved.
01:27They were actually some of the most useful
01:28because a lot of them were first-hand accounts
01:30of people that didn't have to be wary of what they were saying.
01:33Historian sides were just very factual and very respectful,
01:35so it was quite good with Margaret being the naughty one,
01:37getting the kind of, the bit of gossip, yeah.
01:40And then I listened to her Desert Island Discs,
01:42which was really helpful because it's almost her off guard
01:44a little bit more, not on public display as much,
01:47and then listened to all her favourite music,
01:49and we'd play it at home, like, well,
01:51I know her poor sister was subjected to, like,
01:54two years of Margaret.
01:56Just looking at archive footage where we could,
01:58in those tiny moments, what was behind her eyes
02:00was something where she wasn't just on display.
02:07Well, something became very much part of the mannerisms
02:10was the smoking.
02:11She was a chain smoker,
02:13and from the first minute she woke up
02:14to the last night she was smoking,
02:16and so that became kind of a signature Margaret trait.
02:19And I actually found it quite difficult
02:20to act without the cigarette.
02:21The one thing we noticed, actually,
02:23when she was giving these little speeches,
02:25because one of the speeches she gives in Episode 8 of Season 1,
02:27where she takes over from the Queen for a little bit,
02:29was very, very similar to the speech she actually gave,
02:31and now I watched the actual speech she gave in it,
02:33and her eyes, she's just got such a sparkle.
02:35She's so, sort of, alive,
02:37and you can see that she's really mischievous,
02:38and she's naughty.
02:39You can see that even though she's giving
02:41a very proper speech compared to the Queen.
02:43So that was, like, an indication of the spirit
02:45that was inside her,
02:46and that was the thing that I loved most about her.
02:53Oh, my God.
02:54I can't watch it with Margaret, unfortunately.
02:55I'm dying to see Episode 10 of this film,
02:57where the Queen and Philip come back together,
02:59and they speak about all their problems,
03:00so she'll sit there with the Queen,
03:01and be like, done, I'm so sorry.
