00:00Hey everybody, I'm Sojourner and today is Thursday and you know what that means?
00:04Throwback Thursday. There's a throwback treasure inside of here and I've been
00:08given the task of trying it out for three days. I have no idea what's inside.
00:12We are going back and looking at some of our greatest inventions during some of
00:16the greatest times in the olden days. This is so cute. I want to open it and
00:20see what's inside. Oh my god. What? Are you kidding me?
00:28For those of you that don't know, this is a portable CD player.
00:33These were the thing before an iPhone, before an iPod, like this was the go-to.
00:39Headphones. And a CD.
00:43These cases, this is beautiful.
00:46It says burn me, which I'm assuming means I have to make my own playlist.
00:51Talk about nostalgia. I literally was like a CD making fanatic.
00:56I have playlists for every and anything.
01:00So let's see if it works. All the essentials are locked and loaded.
01:04I don't even remember how to use it.
01:06You press the play button.
01:09Up! And it's on. It's working.
01:12Everyone come with me on my journey back to the past as I listen to this Discman
01:19and celebrate my throwback Thursday. I got the jams. I got the tunes. Y'all are not ready. This is
01:24going to be so much fun.
01:25So three days, me and my Discman walking through the streets of New York City.
01:30Hey! I'm excited.
01:32It is day one and I've already noticed my headphones. They're definitely made better today in 2017.
01:41Um, I don't know if you can see this one. It's coming off a little bit, but I can put
01:47it back on.
01:50Voila!
01:51I have everything I need. I have my laptop here. I have my iTunes playlist going. I have my CD
01:57ready.
01:57So now it's time to make a playlist. I'm gonna go ahead and go to my songs
02:03and see, you know, what I feel in the mood to listen to.
02:07Today's musical selection is from the hit Broadway musical, Wicked!
02:12You know, can I just say, back in the day, making a playlist was so much harder than it is
02:17now.
02:18I would have to put the CD into my computer, download the CD onto my iTunes, and then I could
02:23transfer the iTunes into my, my list of songs. Now I'm seeing that it's a lot easier. All I have
02:29to do
02:29is take the CD. Wait. Wait a second. Okay. I don't think this has a disc drive. Since when? Since
02:37when
02:37did they start removing that? Because I feel like there has to be a way. So I'm going to ask
02:41the tech
02:41guys at work what I can do, what kind of advice they have for me, and we'll check back in.
02:48Ta-da! I've got my handy dandy disc drive from the lovely tech guys at work, and now I can
02:54actually
02:55make a CD. It's day two with my disc man, and so today I'm going to go look at the
03:02weird collection
03:03of CDs. Don't judge me, but I've got to pick one out for today. We have hits from My Fair
03:10Lady,
03:10Annie Get Your Gun, Pita Pan. Guys. High School Musical 3, baby. Yep. That's the one. That's the one
03:20today. I got the disc drive from work. I see here now. Boom. Shaka-laka. And now it's like really
03:29time
03:29to make a CD. Look at this. Burn, baby, burn. Normally I listen to like a nice jazz mix in
03:38the morning to help me just get up and get ready. So this will be a little bit of a
03:42different genre
03:42to start my morning off, but I'm excited.
03:51So let's see what's happening now. Okay, let's see. This is always the worst part. And now we wait for
03:58this CD to burn. I'm really happy that the tech guys at work had this disc drive.
04:01We are live. Here we go. Alicia Keys.
04:09So I'm leaving work, and as most people do, when you leave work and you prepare to get on the
04:15train,
04:15you put your headphones in and you listen to music. But I'm not putting my headphones in,
04:20I'm putting my headphones on. And I'm not pulling out my iPhone or my iPhone. I pulled out my disc
04:26man.
04:26And I mean, I'm getting some looks. I'm hearing some whispers. But you know, it's okay. An older
04:32man walked up to me and was like, excuse me, ma'am. Are you actually listening to music on a
04:37disc man?
04:38And I said, sir, yes. Yes, I absolutely am. He's excited to see a young person, you know,
04:44kind of denouncing some of the newer technology and channeling into the things that we use when we were
04:50younger. It is day three of my disc man challenge. Today, I decided to bring a bigger bag, peep the
04:57satchel, so that I wouldn't have much trouble carrying around the disc man. So let me tell
05:04you the tale of me on the four train today. I'm on the train. I hear and see a little
05:10boy ask his mom,
05:11like, mommy, mommy, what is that? And the little boy is pointing to my disc man. And he's like asking
05:17what that is. And she's like, you know, that's what we used to use when we needed to listen to
05:21music.
05:22So he was like, well, that's huge. How do you carry that around? And I'm like, boy, young man,
05:28I understand you. These headphones are definitely not the best. Um, but it makes sense. I mean,
05:36they were made in the 90s, come a long ways and sense with our technology. So I'm closing out day
05:43three, which means it's time for me to give up my beloved disc man. I'm so sad. Um, these past
05:50three
05:50days with the disc man, I feel like I was in a blast in the past to the 90s. I've
05:55only enjoyed doing this.
05:55It was a lot of fun. I'm probably going to start making CDs on my own. Like,
06:00I just think that that was a lot of fun. I felt very cozy and comfortable and in tune with
06:05me and
06:05the music. So you never know. You may see me walking around the street with some disc man. Thanks guys.
