Roughly 100 people die every day of breast cancer in the U.S. — and virtually all of these deaths are from metastatic breast cancer. That's individual people — moms, daughters, sisters, friends — multifaceted women of which cancer is just one thing, not everything. We are telling the stories of these women who have found strength in their sense of self, power in their beauty, and who refuse to let an incurable, deadly disease tell their story for them. Meet Ayanna.

00:02my now husband and I had just gotten engaged a month before I was diagnosed
00:07our relationship has really driven me to not accept what doctors and medical
00:13books and statistics really tell people because I want to get old with him you
00:18know you find like the love of your life and so the biggest thing was like I'm in
00:22it to win it like I said yes because I want to spend the rest of my life with
00:24this person and then you find out that the rest of your life might not be as
00:29long as you were planning my name is Ayana I have found a lump in my breast a
00:34few months before I'd actually gone to the doctor initially my doctor told me
00:38he thought you know it's probably nothing I'm really young I was 33 at the
00:41time the MRI had revealed that the cancer had moved to my liver and I was in fact
00:44stage 4 at that point being diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer three and
00:48a half years ago really put life into perspective work life got a little
00:52difficult what better way to sort of hit the reset button than to start over when
00:57you get a diagnosis like this you have a couple of choices right but like
01:01cancer's already done a ton of things to my life that suck but I'm not gonna
01:04allow it to make me unhappy it just can never have that grip I've always been the
01:09type of person that really cultivates a home that feels really warm and
01:13nurturing again whether it's for me or whether it's for you know me and my
01:18husband are for lots of friends I walk my cute little puggle named Bailey around
01:22the neighborhood and you know stretch my legs and try to really spend 15 20 30
01:26minutes outside breathing in whatever the air might be I think beauty is
01:31different for everyone for me nothing about physical traits it's about
01:35something that people can feel the minute that you walk into a room I feel
01:39amazingly beautiful today
