Roughly 100 people die every day of breast cancer in the U.S. — and virtually all of these deaths are from metastatic breast cancer. That's individual people — moms, daughters, sisters, friends — multifaceted women of which cancer is just one thing, not everything. We are telling the stories of these women who have found strength in their sense of self, power in their beauty, and who refuse to let an incurable, deadly disease tell their story for them. Meet Brittney.

00:01I try to look forward to the future as most as I can. I know some people don't
00:06do that because they don't think they have a future but I'm 19 and like I want
00:10to have a future. Action! I'm Brittany. I was diagnosed when I was 18. I went in
00:15February of 2015 because I found a lump and they said well you're 18 you're too
00:21young to get breast cancer and they sent me home. About three months later the
00:25lump was growing even larger and my nipple inverted and the very next day
00:30they called me in and they said you have breast cancer. I feel like being 19 with
00:37breast cancer is even harder. My life was just beginning and then I was told it was
00:41going to end. I remember my heart dropping and like asking God why is this
00:45happening to me because I was so young. This is the only type of breast cancer that can kill you
00:52and I think more people should be
00:55aware of that because they all focus on early stages but stage four needs more.
01:00When I was first diagnosed you know I was sad and upset and like it was hard for me
01:04and then I realized like no I can't be like this I need to be positive I need to
01:09look for the good. I kind of just realized it. I want people to know that yeah I
01:14have bad days and that you know one day that I will pass away from this but right
01:19now I'm okay and I'm doing well. I don't want people to feel sorry for me. I want to
01:24write a book about what it's like being diagnosed with metastatic cancer when
01:28you're 19 years old. Well 18. I'm actually going to college right now to become a
01:33better writer and that's what I'm doing to look forward to the future. Before cancer
01:39I had self-esteem issues and you know I didn't think I was beautiful and I just I struggled with
01:46that and then
01:47after when I was bald and boobless I found self-confidence and that's when I
01:52realized like I'm beautiful like just how I am.
