Roughly 100 people die every day of breast cancer in the U.S. — and virtually all of these deaths are from metastatic breast cancer. That's individual people — moms, daughters, sisters, friends — multifaceted women of which cancer is just one thing, not everything. We are telling the stories of these women who have found strength in their sense of self, power in their beauty, and who refuse to let an incurable, deadly disease tell their story for them. Meet Champagne.

00:03Until somebody starts doing top-down research in which you start with the deadliest form,
00:10the only deadly form of this disease.
00:12Because if you cure that, you cure everyone.
00:16I'm Champagne Joy and I'm from New York.
00:19Cancerland is a group of women with breast cancer helping women with breast cancer.
00:23I started a hashtag called Cancerland.
00:27We clean people's houses when they're at treatment,
00:30and then we shout from the rooftops about making change in the disease.
00:35And we try to improve the quality of living of women who are going through breast cancer,
00:39and we don't believe anyone should go through it alone.
00:41So metastatic breast cancer means that the breast cancer has spread beyond the breast.
00:46It is now out in your body. It could be in your organs. It can be in your bones.
00:49And it means that it is now a terminal illness and that they have no cure.
00:55I think the biggest shock is there's a public lack of awareness.
01:00They think of breast cancer as done. We gave. That's a curable disease. It's over.
01:04Except for people who are out there, including myself, who say, no.
01:10This is a disease that takes and takes and takes.
01:14It's not just children we're leaving behind. We're so young we're leaving behind mothers.
01:18I won't leave this earth till I see the beginning of change.
01:22I won't see the end of change. But I need to see that beginning.
01:25Or my life meant nothing.
01:27My hope is to see truth lead to research lead to cure.
01:34And until at least the basic knowledge is out that everyone who has breast cancer is at risk of dying
01:40from breast cancer,
01:42because it can come back at any time, until that's known, we can't even start.
01:47True awareness leads to research, which leads to cure, which leads to life.
01:55I've always sort of tied my look into my sense of self.
02:00You know, the whole kind of President of Mars look is something I do in my life.
02:07It may take a lot for me to summon the strength, but if I put my face on, I feel
02:13like me.
02:14I think of beauty as truth, love, and comedy.
02:20People look better when they're smiling. People feel better when they're laughing.
02:24And the worst of it, there's laughter. And that to me is love. And that to me is beauty.
02:29I don't know what makes me champagne joy, but I know that cancer doesn't unmake that.
