00:02I'm Lucy Fink. I'm a video producer at Refinery29 but every so often I like to
00:07try other people's jobs. Today I'm at the Ben & Jerry's factory in Waterbury,
00:11Vermont and I'm gonna see if I have what it takes to create my very own ice cream
00:15flavor. This is Lucy for Hire. I'm with Kirsten. She's a principal food
00:24scientist at Ben & Jerry's and an all-around flavor guru and today she's
00:27gonna help me create my very own ice cream flavor. So your first challenge
00:31today is invent the flavor. I love pizza. Would you ever make a pizza flavor? I think
00:42that's a little too crazy. We're cutting the pizza idea. It's 90 degrees outside
00:47right now so something cool and refreshing and summer feeling would be great. My
00:52favorite summer drink in the morning is a coconut milk latte. I don't know if
00:56there's anything we could do there. I think that would translate really well
00:59into ice cream. We got it. Awesome. I invented the flavor. My second challenge was
01:06to actually make the flavor so we went off to the local market to buy all the
01:10ingredients. We got raw coconut chips, chocolate chunks, a ton of coffee grounds,
01:17cold brew extract, whole coconuts and more. Back in the test kitchen we toasted the
01:27coconut chips, made a coconut flavored base and a coffee flavored base, mix them
01:32together and taste test it along the way. I feel like it needs more. A little more?
01:37Yeah. And then we tried it again and tasted it again. And eventually we piped it out
01:47into our sample pints. Overflow. I think we're good. On pint seven. Finally, our
01:55creation was complete.
02:02Your next challenge is going to be to bring your ice cream to the marketing team and have
02:07a taste test with them. Hello. Hey guys. I made some coconut coffee ice cream but I need
02:17you guys to taste test it and let me know if it's good or bad. And just be honest. I
02:23won't
02:23be offended. I mean it's cool because you start with one bite, it might just be the
02:28coffee and then a different one is the coconut pieces so it's kind of a nice
02:31little journey. So the taste test is a success. This is a success. Now that you've
02:40wowed everyone with their creation, your next challenge is to come up with a
02:44crafty name and branding for it.
02:49Beachside buzz with the coconut. Mmm. Tropical buzz. A loxie buzz. Brews, buzzed, and nuts.
03:00We are on the edge there of something very bad people. Cocoa cold brew. Cocoa cold brew.
03:07I like that. Choco cold brew. Choco cocoa latte. Choco cocoa latte is pretty good.
03:14Finks drink. Finks cocoa. Culver drink. Yeah. Cocoa Joe. A whole latte. Cocos. Orange is
03:21the new crack. Love you a latte. Espresso yourself. All right. No nuts. No nuts. No nuts.
03:28Nuts are out. This is a little boring. Doesn't say anything about coconuts. Too long. Strike that.
03:34Let's get rid of the one that says what it is. This doesn't do it for me.
03:41Okay. Ready? Option one. Cracking coconut latte. One, two, three, four. Option two. Cocoa Joe
03:50latte. Three. You're the tyrant. You're the tyrant. Oh, wow.
03:58I was going to vote for Cracking coconut latte. Yay!
04:06And just like that, I had invented my own flavor. I was given my very own Ben & Jerry's
04:12lab coat. We cracked some coconuts just for fun. And I even brought a few pints home for
04:17my friends and family. All in all, there is a lot of work that goes into creating a new
04:22ice cream flavor. And today, I became an honorary Ben & Jerry's flavor guru.
