Transcript
00:00For anyone who's out there who's interviewing for, about to accept, about to start a new job, here's my best
00:07advice for you.
00:12Number one, negotiate your salary.
00:15Oh, oh, but Sally, they just gave me a great offer and I don't want to upset them.
00:20No, I don't care how great it is, your automatic reflex is to go back and negotiate.
00:24I promise you the guys are. This can be where the gender pay gap starts.
00:29They love you, they've just offered you a job, so ask for more.
00:32Did you negotiate your salary before you came in?
00:35I did.
00:35You did. Right here. Way to go.
00:38Number two, if they do say no, there are other things you can negotiate.
00:41Have you agreed with your boss on metrics for success?
00:44Yes, that was something I really wanted up front.
00:48Great. Each job is different, but in some cases it can be revenue on new clients.
00:52In other cases it can be individuals helped.
00:54In other cases it can be that you have X number of projects that you're supposed to do and those
00:59are turned in on time.
01:02So I really urge you to think about in your job what does success look like and put some numbers
01:08around that.
01:08And number three, the first day, first impressions matter.
01:13Okay, so the first day, so you've negotiated your salary, you've come in, you're ready to work hard, you're great
01:18at your job, you've got metrics, and it's your first day.
01:20Yes.
01:21Do you know what to wear?
01:23No idea.
01:24No idea.
01:25No idea.
01:26Okay, I hate to even talk about this, but here's what the research shows.
01:30The research shows that clothes aren't the most important thing, but clothes are table stakes.
01:37And that if you walk in and somebody says, what the heck is that woman wearing?
01:41You actually never get the opportunity, not even to get the seat at the table, but even get in the
01:47room.
01:48We control $5 trillion of investable assets.
01:51We control 80 to 85% of consumer spending.
01:55Yeah.
01:55We are starting businesses at one and a half or two times the rate of men.
01:58We are graduating from undergraduate and advanced degrees at much greater than the rate of men.
02:05We love men, we love men, but sometimes, or all the time, I don't think we realize our power.
02:11Right.
02:11We've got this power and somehow we still sort of feel like we need to act like little men in
02:17order to get ahead.
02:18We can affect change because of all the power that we have.
02:22Oh, I'm so fired now.
