00:00On today's report card, we're going to be talking about psychedelic drugs.
00:04Oh yeah, but for like a good use, not just abusing it, you know?
00:09I felt like my life forever changed after I did mushrooms.
00:12And that sounds weird because it's just like, I really was just tripping.
00:18There was just this huge ass tree that was so humongous
00:21that I had to go over there and congratulate it and be like,
00:25You're so big. How did you even survive this whole time?
00:30I thought everybody would chop you down, because you're a big daddy tree.
00:40But once I realized I was actually hugging a tree,
00:43I just started laughing so hard that I pissed my pants.
00:48I'm peeing.
00:53I'm still peeing.
00:56The FDA has approved research with psychedelic drugs.
01:00Yeah, that's right.
01:01FDA approved tripping.
01:03It's serious, you guys.
01:05Because they're using it to help people with anxiety, depression, and PTSD.
01:08I need to know more about that.
01:10I'm going to go talk to a cool ass friend and a research expert for those psychedelic drugs.
01:16I'm Rua Ingmar and Jean, and we're going to talk about psychedelic drugs.
01:23So what specific drugs are you researching right now, and what are they treating?
01:29Okay.
01:30And how can you send them to me?
01:31Yeah.
01:32Yeah.
01:32We're working with Pure MDMA that's been synthesized by an approved chemist,
01:38and we use that drug to treat primarily PTSD.
01:44And there's another organization that I don't work for, but they support research with a drug called psilocybin,
01:50which is more well known as magic mushrooms.
01:52That research is actually quite far along in regards to treating anxiety associated with a terminal illness.
01:59I've definitely had experiences with taking psychedelic drugs in my late teens,
02:05and you kind of never know which way it's going to go.
02:09Is there a way to know from personal experience?
02:13This is not personal experience.
02:14This is legal with oversight with the FDA and the DEA to a study to have their PTSD treated with
02:23MDMA.
02:25There are three prep sessions.
02:27So these are like 90-minute long therapy sessions where the person is prepared and told what might happen,
02:34how to ensure safety.
02:36And then the actual drug sessions, they last between six to eight hours, so they can be quite long.
02:42Yeah.
02:43That's very long.
02:43That's a long time.
02:45Is there anyone who should definitely not take a psychedelic drug?
02:48Definitely.
02:50We have people who have a bipolar illness, have experienced mania, or any kind of psychotic type of disorder,
02:58so schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder.
03:00These are people who are screened out of the research for their own safety.
03:06It's funny, because I know it's a big deal that there's FDA-approved treatment and research now with psychedelic drugs,
03:16but it feels like it's such a slow process.
03:19Is it economics and just the government having control over what kind of pharmaceutical companies needing to make money?
03:28And then being like, yeah, we know there are other things out there, but we want to sell the drugs
03:32and make the money on the things that we want to sell.
03:35Some people think that the pharmaceutical companies are sort of against this research, and that's not the case at all.
03:40But there's a lack of funding, and that's why MAPS is a non-profit.
03:45The research you're doing, do you think that the goal, the end goal, is that, like, years from now, someone
03:50has PTSD,
03:52and they can just go to their doctor and be like, hey, let's do this.
03:56We estimate that MDMA might become a prescription medication sometime in the early 2020s.
04:02I have a question about, people always say, like, if you're tripping, don't look into the mirror.
04:08Uh-huh.
04:08And like, oh, it's spooky.
04:10Uh-huh.
04:10It's like a Freddy Krueger's gonna pop out or something. What's going on?
04:13People, um, begin to see things accentuated. We're talking about these illusions, right? Maybe their eyes seem larger.
04:21Because I definitely looked into the mirror, like, ASAP. How did it go?
04:24And I looked adorable. My eyes are so big.
04:27And like an anime?
04:28Yeah, I looked like a cute little anime character. That's good.
04:31Uh, it was kind of like a Snapchat filter, you know?
04:33That's a pretty good analogy.
04:35Yeah, like, you can do drugs, or you can just go on Snapchat.
04:38So here in our report card, we'd like to grade our topics.
04:40So today we're gonna be grading the use of psychedelic drugs for treatments like PTSD and all that serious stuff
04:46that we talked about.
04:47A is for Mushroom Mania.
04:49B is for Day Tripping.
04:52C is for Psychedelic Sometimes.
04:54D is Do You Even Dare.
04:57And F is Straight Straight Edge.
05:07Alright, let's reveal our answers.
05:12Can I do this?
05:15You jerk.
05:18So this whole time, you've just been on drugs.
05:22Yeah.
05:22Guys, I just feel like, for real though, like I feel it.
05:31Sometimes when you're tripping, you become the outsider.
05:36Good trip on the couch, bad trip in the solo awkward gray chair.
05:40Why did I get a gray chair?
05:41I don't know.
05:42I can make room for you on the couch.
05:43Oh, good.
05:46Okay, I'll pop over.
05:47What's the reason?
05:49Is it just the drugs?
05:52Oh, your hands feel all nice and cold on my back.
05:55Is this real life?
05:59To be with questions?
06:00Yes, yes.
06:00There are!
06:01You
