00:07Hair is hair, no matter the gender of the person.
00:11So in the spirit of doing whatever we want,
00:14we decided to celebrate the most beautiful spring hairstyles on long locks
00:18that just so happened to belong to men.
00:22But first, the history of men with long hair.
00:25Throughout history, men's hairstyles have been heavily influenced by religion,
00:29social status, wars, and celebrities.
00:33From the glorious long-haired samurai warriors,
00:35to the wigs and riches of the 17th century Frenchmen,
00:38to the Rastafarian-inspired dreadlocks mainstreamed by Bob Marley in the 70s,
00:43long locks on men have evolved drastically over time.
00:47In the present, we've seen the rise and fall of man buns,
00:51Uzi Vert and Bieber dreads,
00:53Kaepernick's controversial fro,
00:55and even the carefree bro flow.
00:58It seems that these days, just about anything goes.
01:10I originally started growing out my hair because I wanted to do locks of love.
01:14I usually just, um, I'll put it up in a bun,
01:17or, like, where you just put, like, this part in a bun, and, like, let it...
01:21I don't know what that's called.
01:22I don't know how you girls do that with your arms.
01:24My shoulders get tired after, like, three seconds.
01:26So every time I call my mom, she always asks,
01:28have you cut your hair yet, Matt?
01:29I was like, come on, give me a break.
01:32Please.
01:33Am I pretty now?
01:35Okay, I don't want to touch it.
01:36This would definitely be an upgrade to my normal hair look.
01:39A little, a little something more fresh, you know?
01:41I feel like I could pull this off.
01:43I just need to invest in some, some, uh, bobby pins.
01:45Is that what?
01:45Bobby pins.
01:46And just twist and pin.
01:51I have been growing my hair out for about five years now.
01:54I decided to pick a hairstyle where I don't have to do my hair a lot,
01:58but still have a good, natural look to myself.
02:02I have missed out on opportunities because of the length of my hair,
02:05but I've also gained a lot of opportunities for the length of my hair as well
02:08because not everybody can grow the type of hair that I have,
02:11or maybe pull it off the way I pull it off, I should say.
02:22Hey!
02:25Okay.
02:26That is what I'm talking about.
02:29It makes me feel good.
02:30One, because my hair is not everywhere.
02:33Like, I don't have to worry about the wind blowing or anything like this,
02:35or my hair on my face.
02:36I can just go.
02:38I feel like I'm free.
02:40Or, I should say.
02:47I've been growing my hair for about three years.
02:49My daughter loves playing with my hair.
02:52She, like, tends to braid it, but she doesn't really know how to braid yet.
02:54My mom was like, so how long are you going to let it go?
02:56Because, you know, it's, like, long and then it's, like, getting, like, really long.
02:59And I'm like, are you listening to metal, Josh?
03:01What's going on?
03:02I've actually been doing braids a lot lately just because it gets it out of the way.
03:07I sometimes do one braid like they wear in Portlandia.
03:10It's been a lot of fun having long hair.
03:11I get to try a bunch of different styles and kind of keep things fresh and changing all the time.
03:17So there's a functionality to braids I love.
03:20And I think this kind of spiral thing, it's some crazy sacred geometry shit going on right now.
03:26So I'm into that.
03:33I think, yeah, I wear my hair all kinds of ways.
03:37And this is probably the most fancy it's been, but I'm excited to go wear it out.
03:44I've been growing my hair since second grade, I think.
03:47So maybe, like, 15, 14 years.
03:51I'm from D.C., so, like, everybody back home has, like, blocks.
03:54But then I also went to Pepperdine, which is, like, a predominantly white area.
03:57And it was just kind of, like, they were in awe.
04:00Like, I got so many questions.
04:01Is it real?
04:02Like, just so many different perceptions depending on the person's background.
04:06Having long hair shows commitment.
04:08It shows personality.
04:09It shows the ability to stick to something for a long amount of time through adversity.
04:16Tip for people who are trying to go to Hair Lockdown.
04:18Don't cheat.
04:19Don't get fake extensions.
04:21Men.
04:22Actually put in the work.
04:23Go through each stage.
04:28Oh, that's dope.
04:29I like the designs in the back.
04:30It looks really cool.
04:31It would be actually kind of hard for me to do it myself, but I do actually really like it.
04:38I didn't want to get a haircut, so I just never did.
04:41And it just kept going.
04:43My mom has dreads.
04:44That's pretty cool.
04:44So we're kind of, like, on a hair-off kind of thing.
04:48The only people that have told me to cut my hair would be directors.
04:51And if they're telling me, I just say no.
04:53And then I don't take the role.
04:55Most of the time, wind is what styles my hair.
04:58I'm sorry if it's a pain to comb my hair.
05:15Wow!
05:18It goes all the way back.
05:20I don't know.
05:20Maybe a little too femme for me.
05:22It makes me think of Princess Leia.
05:24And I like the poof anyway.
05:25The poof's fun.
05:30I've been growing my hair for about three or four years.
05:33And I just trim the tips every couple months.
05:36Most of the time, people think it's a wig or it's fake.
05:40And they ask, like, oh, can I touch your hair?
05:42As I was growing out my hair, every couple of months it would look really nice.
05:46And then, like, maybe there would be, like, a stage after that where, like, you know,
05:49why the hell does my hair look like this?
05:51And then a stage would be, like, okay, it looks good again.
05:54And then, you know, it's just a back and forth thing.
05:56Am I nervous?
05:57Well, just a little bit because I don't even know what's going to happen.
06:01I didn't, but, you know, YOLO.
06:24Yeah, I look like I transformed and stuff.
06:26Now you can see my face now.
06:30Oh, this hair makes me feel like I could drive with the window down now.
06:37I have been growing out my hair for two years.
06:39The shape of the back of my head didn't match the front of my forehead.
06:44So I was like, I'm just going to grow out my hair.
06:46Long hair will get all over your face and in your mouth and in your nose and wherever your face
06:54is at, it's going to get all over.
06:55So be prepared.
07:02I'm the type of guy that would take risk.
07:19What?
07:22Oh.
07:23Whoa.
07:27This look made me feel like I look like a poodle right now.
07:30I look cute as fuck.
07:35I feel like men, guys, boys, all of us, we should be able to do what we want with our
07:40hair.
07:40When you have longer hair, it has more option to do crazy things, which can be a pain, but
07:45it can also be super fun.
07:46People do tell me that I should get rid of my long hair.
07:49I'm more about like testing boundaries.
07:52I want to rewrite the rules as opposed to following them.
07:54So it's part of my identity, so that's why I keep it.
07:57Short hair is cool, but I like having the wind blow to my hair, honestly.
08:02Do it.
08:03Grow it out.
08:04It's fun.
08:05It's a new experience.
08:06Yeah, try something new.
08:07Go for it.
08:08Have you ever constantly been cutting your hair?
08:11Yeah, I'm probably going to cut it after this video.
