00:01Sophia, I always wanted you to be part of the family business.
00:10I've learned everything about filmmaking from all my life growing up on my dad's sets.
00:15It was always an exciting place to go, so I would always want to go after school or in summer.
00:20I'd spend all my time on set and there was always some exciting things going on.
00:23In my 20s, I went to art school and I tried different things.
00:27I was interested in so many different things but not great at one thing.
00:30Then I made a short film and that's when I really felt like I was doing something that clubbed for
00:36me
00:36because it brought together all the things I was interested in.
00:40Photography, music, and design.
00:43I think it was when I did my short film that I realized this was something that I could do.
00:47I remember my first premiere and how scary it was and how exciting that people responded well.
00:54I remember my dad preparing me by saying your movie's never as bad as your rough cut
00:58and it's never as good as dailies because you see your dailies and you get so excited.
01:02And I remember when I saw my first rough cut of Virgin Suicides and I just thought it was a
01:06total disaster.
01:07It was really hard to see and you get in the edit and get it the way you want.
01:12You just hope that the audience will get with the flow of how you're telling the story and that it
01:17works and it's not terribly boring.
01:20Oh my gosh, and the Oscar goes to...
01:25Sofia Coppola for Lost in Translation.
01:30Thank you to my dad for everything he taught me.
01:33Thank you to my brother Roman and all my friends who were there for me when I was stuck at
01:3712 pages
01:38and encouraged me to keep writing.
01:40You can hear a million good things but if you hear one bad thing it stays in your mind forever.
01:44Of course.
01:44Get your courage up to put your work out there.
01:47Five or six years old, he's interviewing me, asking me questions and my mom walks through and she says,
01:51because you're a Wonder Woman.
01:53That was the attitude that they were very encouraging.
01:55And yeah, and I saw that my dad never gave up.
01:58He was always really persevered and, I don't know, lately I've been trying to start a film project
02:03and I'm waiting for the company to give me the go-ahead and he's like, just start it.
02:07It's the idea that you don't wait for permission, you just do things and hopefully people will follow.
02:14So, let's go!
02:15I'll see you next time.
