00:00I'm excited, but I'm like, I have to base turkey by myself for the first time.
00:04Is that the word based?
00:05Let's get all up in it.
00:07Welcome to the R29 chat room.
00:10I'm Hannah.
00:10I'm Ryan.
00:11And I'm Wembley.
00:12And today we're talking about going home for the holidays and how to deal with how stressful that is.
00:18Do you guys hold different political views from your family?
00:21And how are you going to deal with that when you go home for the holidays?
00:25Fresh off this year's election.
00:27So my dad is like a CNN maniac.
00:30I can only watch so much of the same story over and over and over again.
00:35And I just know that I can look forward to us arguing over like who's going to have the remote
00:41and what's going to be on TV.
00:43I would actually go to say the opposite.
00:45My dad is like of the Fox News family.
00:49Hey dad, what's up?
00:51I love him.
00:52I love all my family, but they are definitely more conservative than I am.
00:57As I've matured, I think that those discussions, especially political ones, have been a little bit more tame.
01:08My mom is my best friend and we recently realized that we just can't talk about politics.
01:14It's just something we don't talk about.
01:16We talk about everything else.
01:17We just don't talk about that.
01:18Let me drink my cider.
01:20May or may not be spiked to handle everyone.
01:23Oh yeah, mine's spiked.
01:24Do you guys have any family members that seem to always be out to instigate some kind of an argument
01:30with you?
01:31No.
01:32Do you?
01:33Hey dad.
01:35It's sometimes just like, oh, well Wembley, you know, like so-and-so is like dating this person now.
01:40Like what's going on with you?
01:41And I'm just like, I'm here with my bottle of wine.
01:44This is my date to this dinner.
01:46Leave me alone.
01:47My parents are divorced and both remarried and I have six step-siblings and it's not that anybody necessarily like
01:54pins us against each other,
01:56but it's just like naturally where just like, I'm like, that's my dad.
01:59That's my dad.
02:00Do you guys feel that it's different now when you go home and there are rules back in place and
02:04you're like, but I'm an adult.
02:06How do you deal with that?
02:08I prefer to go to my parents' house than for them to come to me.
02:11They try to come all up into my space and tell me what to do and control my TV and
02:19my, like, and I'm just like, y'all know I'm 29.
02:23I'm grown AF.
02:25You know what I mean?
02:25Like, I feel like when I go home, it's definitely very strange because I have moved on, moved away.
02:33It's interesting to be able to take yourself out of that and then go back in and be like, oh
02:38my gosh, like you have flaws too.
02:40Yeah, my mom, my stepdad and my sister are actually coming to spend the holidays with me this year.
02:48It's going to be so interesting to have them in my house.
02:52I'm going to lay out my rules.
02:54I'm going to be like, no shoes?
02:56Did you make your bed this morning?
02:57I think that a lot of times we forget that adults are really like grown up children.
03:04It's humanizing.
03:05I don't know how they're, how else to put it.
03:07How do you feel the inevitable life milestone questions about relationships, about marriage, about having babies?
03:15How do you deal with that?
03:17My parents are just the cutest couple ever.
03:20They're relationship goals for real.
03:22I love that.
03:22Yeah, but they're like, okay, well, when are you about to be relationship goals?
03:27You know?
03:27Yeah.
03:29Everyone in my family is very traditional, I'd say.
03:33For me, I'm in such a totally different place and my tactic is to like switch gears as fast as
03:40possible and be like, yeah, I'm so busy.
03:41I'm working on this project and this project and it's just, it's totally crazy.
03:45One perk of having divorced parents is, you know, this like manipulation thing that you like learn from a very
03:50young age.
03:51And so anytime my parents bring that up, I'm like, well, do you want me to get a divorce like
03:57you and mom?
03:58You know, I'm only 24.
03:59I need to live, I need to experience.
04:01We all agree that the holidays are incredible and such a special time to do with family and the people
04:07that you love.
04:08But it is important to have a couple tricks up your sleeve when preparing to go home to be with
04:14your family.
04:15My personal tip and something that I have to really hold on to is pick your battles and then always
04:22have an escape plan.
04:23Bring a smile and bring some wine because I feel like as long as you can laugh and have something
04:28that helps you laugh a little bit more,
04:30you'll be okay.
04:31So I guess my advice would be something that my mom always tells me.
04:36Live in the moment.
04:37It's, it's the family that matters and you're with your family.
04:41Some people don't have that.
04:43So it's like, you know, be grateful for it, for them and enjoy the holidays.
04:47That's what the holidays are all about.
04:49So true.
04:50If you guys have any tips and tricks or favorite family traditions or memories, share it with us in the
