00:03My mom's Argentinian and in Argentina it is the cultural norm to live with your
00:07parents through school and through adulthood. Argentinian culture is not the
00:11only culture that practices this tradition. I wanted to talk to my friend
00:14Christine who lives at home with her parents who are from India. I come from
00:17an Indian household and my parents were both born and raised in India then they
00:21came here in their 20s. Then I went to college and the thing in college that
00:25was a little nerve-wracking for me was so many people were dorming and it was so
00:29normal it was so regular but I got nervous my parents asked me like do you
00:33want a dorm and I said no I think I'm okay. I figured if there was anything
00:38going on at school that I couldn't handle I wouldn't have to call my parents I
00:41could just be home and tell them what was going on and that made me feel a lot
00:46more comfortable with my decision. Wanting to go to frat parties was an issue at
00:50first because my mom was like you know what they do in these parties you're 18
00:5517 they're gonna be drinking there's gonna be drugs you can't go do this blah
00:59blah blah at those times I'll be like maybe I should have just dorm because I
01:02could just tell her I'm hanging out and I could just do whatever I want. Talk to me
01:06a little about your upbringing and did they make you feel like you had to stay
01:09at home in the beginning? So in India it's very normal to live with your parents as a
01:14woman you once you get married you would leave and go live with your in-laws and
01:18your husband from that side but family always stays together. What do you think the
01:22biggest misconception is about living at home with your parents? Is that you're lazy that
01:26you're not trying to do anything with your life and you're trying to mooch off
01:30your parents which I don't think is true because some parents like mine don't want
01:33us to go. You do what makes your life easier whatever helps you move forward
01:38sometimes you have to backtrack a little bit to refocus reprioritize so you can
01:43move forward. Seeing Christine's enthusiasm about living at home with her
01:46parents really struck a chord with me but it's all really Christine has ever known
01:50what about someone who's moved out and then moved back in with their parents? I
01:55wanted to talk to my friend Abby who moved back into her parents place after she
01:59moved out and believe me it's a full house. I live at home with my parents my
02:04grandma Chip and my two cats and of course my husband. Of course. Of course you
02:09can't forget him I usually do but he's there. My husband and I live together in
02:14Manhattan and in Brooklyn and then we decided to move back in with my parents
02:18only temporarily six months was the cat at age 24. And now how old are you? Oh my
02:25gosh I'm 30. What are some of the perks of living at home? There are certain chores
02:29I absolutely hate to do like ironing. I hate ironing. What else? So I do live a
02:34very low-waste lifestyle and if you think about it it's the most efficient and
02:38sustainable to have multiple generations in one house. Do you think that part of
02:42you is less of a full adult? 100% absolutely but I don't mind that. Why did you move back
02:51home? After
02:52graduating law school I didn't secure my job yet my husband was working on
02:56Long Island my parents have a house on Long Island and it just made sense in
03:00that temporary period of figuring out where I was gonna work to move back home.
03:04But there must be part of you that it isn't just purely financial that you
03:07genuinely like living with your parents and your grandma. I love my mom I love living
03:10at home so part of me just thinks I do love it. They think a lot of parents would
03:15love to have their kids back. Oh absolutely and I totally judged anyone who
03:20was back home after college. Coming to that realization is kind of hard that my
03:24husband and I are both working we're both successful but if we had an
03:28apartment we wouldn't be able to save for our future. Having made a point living in
03:32a multi-generational home can definitely save a lot of resources and money. Saving
03:37money was the original reason for my friend Matthew to move back home with
03:40his parents but he ended up staying for reasons beyond that. I live at home with
03:44my parents and my two younger siblings. I attended my university and unfortunately
03:49my parents couldn't pay for my education so I had to take some loans out and I
03:53knew once I graduated it would be smart to live at home save up pay off my loans
03:58ASAP and then pursue my music career which I'm now doing full-time. Tell me a
04:02little bit about your dad. You know my father's been really sick he's had a couple of
04:06operations like he spent a couple of months in the hospital so you know I
04:11wanted to step up and set a good example for my younger sisters. I'm the next one
04:15up as far as being the man in the house so. And how's it like with your parents
04:18living with them like going back in afterwards because I'm assuming college
04:22you were living with all your friends, you had no rules. You know like being Latino like
04:26family is so important and my parents we have a great relationship it's almost like a
04:30privilege honestly in a Latin household like it's open to everyone in the family so
04:36I'll come home from work and five of my theops will be home and I think the best
04:41part of living at home is just having that home-cooked meal with that secret
04:45ingredient of love. So what are some of the cons of living at home? Oh man cons. There are a
04:50lot of
04:50cons. Like I said I live with my younger siblings this this girl she was talking
04:56about her roommates and I was like here comes the question like living at home
04:59what's the situation like she was like so tell me about your roommates I was like
05:03oh man I have two roommates one of them's in fifth grade the other one's in
05:08college they're my younger sisters then she paused I was like these
05:12advertisers are great though like like we should order this. I used to feel ashamed
05:16about living at home with my parents but after talking with everyone today I
05:20realized that it's a lot more common than I thought and there are a lot of
05:23benefits. I was supposed to go apartment hunting this week but maybe now I won't
05:27mom will you have me forever
