00:00Hi, my name is Shirley. I'm Marcos. My name is Maria. I'm Cory. My name's Katie. And today
00:05I'm going to be giving you my unprofessional, unqualified, totally
00:10personal, but very experienced advice, advice, opinion, on how to make friends, how to make
00:17friends, because I have a lot of friends, like so many. My advice on making new
00:23friends is to first be true to who you are. I personally find it hard to come
00:28up to strangers and strike up conversations, so I've met most of my
00:32friends by being myself, by being funny, by going to shows, going to bars. Finding
00:36those spaces that you really feel at home in and really sparking that with
00:40somebody else. What I like to do is notice what's weird around me and then
00:47comment about it to someone else and be like, hey, that's pretty weird, huh? Point
00:53out something and then like complain about it, basically. I can't believe we don't
00:58have any coffee here. It's crazy. And then instant friends and you'll remember
01:04it forever. You won't remember it forever. That's not true. For me, moving to New York
01:08City, I found a lot of friends by finding them on Instagram and sort of connecting
01:12over different issues that we felt were really important. Go out into the world,
01:17participate, go network, go to events, go hang out, try new things. There you'll meet
01:23people and there you can build those relationships. Whole Foods has a lot of cool people. Strike up a
01:29conversation about kale juice. That is weird. That's so true. And I'll be like, I know.
01:35Want to talk about how it's weird more? And they'll be like, yes. Yes, I do. Or if you're in
01:41a new class with
01:42someone, you could always chat up the person next to you about the homework and be like, ugh, I hate
01:47homework. Chances are they do too. I used to do this thing with my friends when we would go into
01:51elevators, crowded elevators, and we would just start singing popular songs and seeing
01:55who else would chime in and sing with us. And that was a good way of meeting people and
02:00getting conversation started. Whoever you're being, you're going to attract that type of friend. So if
02:05you're being a loving person, a caring person, a kind person, chances are you're going to attract
02:13a loving friend, a caring friend, a kind friend. Just be like, hey, it's raining. You know, people
02:22be like, yeah, it sucks. Your friends want to know you. They don't want to know the construction
02:27of who you are. Do the things that you like to do and you'll find your people. And don't stress
02:32out
02:32about making all of your friends right now or at your school or whatever because you're going to
02:38keep making friends throughout your entire life and you're never too old to make friends. So there
02:43will be more opportunities. There are millions of people on the earth and there are perfect fits out
02:50there for you. So if you try to make a friend and it doesn't work out, don't freak out. You
02:57will meet
02:57your perfect match. Just keep trying. If I have one takeaway, I think it's just don't worry about it.
03:04You're going to be great.
