There are so many different types of makeup brushes. Refinery29 tries to identify them all in this Can You Guess challenge.
Transcript
00:00Hi everybody, I'm Samantha.
00:01Hey, my name is Magel.
00:02And on today's Can You Guess, I'm going to try out all these magical brushes and try
00:07to guess exactly what they are and what they're used for.
00:11I think that one does eyelashes.
00:14I have no guess otherwise.
00:16I love makeup.
00:18I have too many brushes to count.
00:21I don't know what they're used for, but I use them for whatever I want.
00:25I have no idea what these brushes are for.
00:28I have no idea what these are.
00:31I'm pretty sure I know what most of these do, or at least I know what I would use them
00:36for.
00:37So we've taped up all the handles so I can't just read the names, which is about my only
00:42plan of success.
00:44After we go through all of them, I'm going to pull off the tape, we'll do the big reveal,
00:47and we'll learn about how right I was.
00:51Okay.
00:53Okay, so this little guy right here is everybody's best friend.
00:57This is the kabuki brush.
00:59This brush is definitely used for powder.
01:01I would say it's like a powder kabuki brush.
01:04The kabuki.
01:08There she is.
01:09Hi, thank you for fixing all my mistakes.
01:12And so this brush is the same damn thing.
01:15Just look at this.
01:17Same damn thing.
01:18I don't know.
01:19You versus the guy she tells you not to worry about.
01:22That's what we have.
01:25This is a powder brush.
01:28They're the same thing.
01:29You can use them both.
01:31This is weird.
01:32See, they're just trying to get our money, but I'm here to save you children.
01:35So I'm going to say this is like a rouge or a blush.
01:40This little guy, he's got an angle.
01:42He's there to chisel something out.
01:44This is an angled contour brush.
01:45That's what this is.
01:46This is blush.
01:47I got it wrong.
01:48I forgot about blush.
01:51Who needs that?
01:52It's just pinch your cheeks a little bit, you know?
01:54I think I got that right.
01:55You did.
01:56Thank you, everyone.
01:57This brush is, I think it's called like a flat lay brush, and I believe once you put
02:03your concealer on underneath your eyes, you kind of just like flatten it right there.
02:09This is a foundation brush.
02:10I was very close.
02:12I said that you put your foundation and or your highlighter underneath your eye, which
02:15you can do, but you can also slather this whole brush over your face, and it will lay
02:21your foundation into place.
02:24Now this is a duo fiber brush.
02:26This is actually a pretty small duo fiber brush.
02:29A lot of people use ones that are about twice as big as this for blush.
02:32It can have like a lighter application opposed to something like this, which is super dense.
02:38Yes, this is a duo fiber brush.
02:43I know my brushes.
02:46I think this is like an eyebrow brush.
02:49That's the only hair on your face you can brush, so I think that's a solid guess on my
02:53part.
02:53So I think this is an eyebrow brush.
02:55This guy, if this is not for eyebrows, I'm going to lose my shit.
02:59It's a brow comb.
03:00So this is just a very small brush.
03:02I'm going to call this like a shading brush, right?
03:06You're going to like a contouring brush.
03:07You want to like put in the contours, right?
03:09You want to highlight what you want to see.
03:11So I think this is a contouring brush.
03:13Blending.
03:15Blending.
03:16Contouring is blending.
03:17I think.
03:18I'm going to call that another half point.
03:21No, I'm being told that that does not count.
03:23This little guy looks like a smudging brush.
03:27Smudging brush?
03:28Smudgy.
03:29I call it a smudgy brush.
03:32Short eyeshadow brush.
03:35So the short eyeshadow brush is to smudge eyeshadow into your eyelids and aka smudgy.
03:45So this brush, I know it goes on your eyelid, but honestly it looks like, because it has
03:52like these little whiskers on it.
03:54It looks like a brush that you use to like cover up your mustache.
03:58This is an angled shadow brush.
04:01That was incorrect.
04:04We're all shocked.
04:05This is just going to be a plain eyeshadow brush.
04:08This is like a little paint brush.
04:10This one is a shader.
04:14Since when?
04:16Oh my God.
04:18So this is a shader brush.
04:19You apply light powder right below the eyebrow or right here in the corner of your eyelid.
04:26Crazy, because I've been only doing that with my pinky finger all this time.
04:31And then we have Mr. Angled Eyeliner Brush here, because he is there to give you a wing.
04:38This is the real cat eye brush.
04:40So this is like bougie cat eye and this is like cat eye, cat eye.
04:45This is just eyebrow.
04:46I said this is cat eye.
04:48I said this is for like a perfect little cat eye.
04:50So this guy is to apply eyebrow powder and precision eyeliner.
04:56She wants to give you a cat.
04:58Okay.
04:59This guy is a lip brush.
05:01And I only know that because of a Hannah Montana movie.
05:06What?
05:06I'm wrong on that.
05:10This little guy is for concealer.
05:17This brush is used to fan all the haters away.
05:22Basically, you put this on your face like this after you're done and you're just like,
05:26bitch, move.
05:27Get out of my face.
05:28I'm a unicorn.
05:29Duh.
05:30This one, I'm actually excited to find out what it is.
05:34I know it looks like a fan.
05:36What a useless name.
05:38You apply brush, highlighter, and you also use it to get rid of excess powder.
05:46Or you can just take it to church.
05:48So the cool thing about brushes is that you can take them and use them to your needs specifically,
05:54and you don't have to exactly use them for what they're intended for.
05:58So if this is a lip brush to you, like it is to me, because I don't know who puts
06:03concealer on
06:04with that small of a brush, then it is what you want it to be.
06:08Because at the end of the day, you're going to look and feel the way you want to feel with
06:11makeup.
06:12And I think that's just how it should be.
