00:00Ethiopia is at risk of a renewed civil war.
00:03Rival movements are setting aside their differences to cooperate against the government,
00:07while a peace deal meant to end the last war is now under threat.
00:12So who is fighting whom and why?
00:15The federal government, led by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed,
00:19fought a devastating war against the Tigray People's Liberation Front, or TPLF, from 2020 to 2022.
00:26Both sides signed a peace agreement to end the war,
00:29but many issues that drove the conflict remain unresolved.
00:33Now, fighting is flaring up again.
00:36The government is also facing other armed groups,
00:39including Fano militias in the Amhara region and the Oromo Liberation Army, or OLA, in Oromia.
00:46Why is the conflict escalating?
00:48The grievances differ from one region to another.
00:51In Tigray, leaders continue to dispute political power, security arrangements, and contested territory.
00:59In Amhara, anger over the federal government's security policies has fueled an armed rebellion.
01:05In Oromia, the OLA says it is fighting for greater political representation and Oromo self-determination.
01:13These groups do not all share the same goals, but they have found common ground in opposing the government.
01:19The risk is that these separate conflicts could merge into a wider war,
01:23threatening millions of civilians in Ethiopia and potentially destabilizing the wider Horn of Africa.
01:29With the
01:31Amen.
