00:00The government has no target year to settle outstanding 1MDB claims or recover its assets,
00:07says the Second Finance Minister, Amir Hamzah Azizan.
00:10Amir clarified that 2039 marks the maturity of government-guaranteed 1MDB Sukuk principle,
00:16not a deadline for recovering funds.
00:19Responding to Ipoh Timur MP Howard Lee,
00:22he said recovery efforts depended on court decisions and enforcement proceedings locally and overseas.
00:28The government's priority remains meeting its financial obligations
00:32while recovering as much of the misappropriated funds as possible.
00:37As of August 31st, the government had paid RM42.5 billion in 1MDB-related debts and commitments.
00:44Another RM8.9 billion remains payable under the Sukuk comprising RM5 billion in principal
00:50and RM3.9 billion in interest through 2039.
00:54With RM31.3 billion already recovered,
00:58Amir estimated the government's net burden at RM20.1 billion,
01:02assuming no further recoveries.
01:04However, he cautioned that court awards did not guarantee repayment,
01:08which depended on appeals, asset tracing and enforcement of court orders.
