00:00Did you know an entire country lost its internet in under 10 minutes?
00:03And the attack fit inside a single envelope?
00:06In January 2003, a piece of malicious code called SQL Slammer was unleashed on the internet.
00:12It was tiny.
00:13So tiny it fit inside one single network packet,
00:16the smallest possible unit of data sent across a network.
00:19But small didn't mean weak.
00:21SQL Slammer doubled in size every eight and a half seconds.
00:24It spread so fast it choked global internet traffic within minutes.
00:28South Korea went dark.
00:30ATMs stopped working.
00:32Airline systems crashed.
00:33Emergency call centers went down.
00:35The terrifying part?
00:36Microsoft had already released a fix six months earlier.
00:39180 days.
00:41And almost nobody had applied it.
00:43This wasn't a sophisticated attack from a genius hacker.
00:46It was arithmetic colliding with neglect.
00:48The worm simply ran the math that humans refused to take seriously.
00:52SQL Slammer didn't expose a flaw in the code.
00:55It exposed a flaw in us.
00:56Patches don't protect systems.
00:58People do.
01:00And in 2003, people weren't ready.
01:02Some would argue we still aren't.
