00:00Did you know the entire logic of modern cyber security was invented by accident in 1971?
00:05It started on ARPANET, the early military network that would eventually become the internet.
00:09A programmer named Bob Thomas built an experimental program called Creeper.
00:13It wasn't designed to cause damage, it was just a test to see if a program could move
00:18itself across a network.
00:19It could.
00:20Creeper jumped from machine to machine, leaving behind a simple message on each one.
00:24I'm the Creeper, catch me if you can.
00:26Nobody had a word for what it was yet.
00:28Today we call it a worm.
00:30Then something remarkable happened.
00:32Another programmer built a second program called Reaper.
00:35Its only job was to chase Creeper across the network and delete it.
00:38One program hunting another, across a live network, in 1971.
00:42Nobody planned for this to be the founding moment of an entire industry, but it was.
00:47Every anti-virus program, every threat detection system, every cyber security team operating
00:52today is still running the same basic logic.
00:55Hunter vs. hunted, written into the architecture before anyone knew what they were building.
