00:00Did you know a man was so generous that his kindness destroyed an entire economy for over
00:05a decade? In 1324, Mansa Musa, the emperor of Mali, set out on a pilgrimage to Mecca. He brought
00:12with him 60,000 people and enough gold to make the world stop and stare. When he passed through
00:18Cairo, he started giving it away. To strangers, to merchants, to anyone who crossed his path.
00:24Thousands of pounds of gold handed out like it meant nothing. And to him, it basically didn't.
00:30But to Egypt, it was a catastrophe. So much gold flooded the market that it stopped being
00:35worth anything. Prices collapsed. Merchants lost fortunes overnight. The entire Egyptian
00:41economy went into a spiral that could not escape. For 12 years, the gold market stayed broken.
00:47Traders were still complaining about it two decades later. Mansa Musa never meant to cause
00:51harm. He was simply being generous. But he was so unimaginably wealthy that his charity
00:57hit harder than most conquests ever could.
