The Citroën C5 Aircross Hybrid tries to prove that a family SUV can stay practical, distinctive, and still make sense in a market hit by inflation. It gets a full test drive and review here, with a close look at the new design, the bigger body, the boot, rear-seat space, cockpit layout, and the mild-hybrid powertrain.

The second-generation C5 Aircross is longer, roomier, and sharper than before, but it also keeps some of Citroën’s quirky ideas. There’s a 565-litre boot, comfortable rear seats with a flat floor, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a 145 hp 1.2-litre hybrid setup shared with Stellantis relatives like the Opel Frontera. The review also covers visibility, parking, fuel economy, ride comfort, adaptive cruise control, and the surprisingly competitive pricing.

Created for viewers searching for Citroën C5 Aircross review, 2026 Citroën C5 Aircross Hybrid test drive, family SUV comparison, compact SUV buying advice, and real-world hybrid SUV impressions. It’s useful if you want an honest car review, practical SUV interior review, or a Stellantis family crossover comparison with everyday driving and pricing context.

00:00this is the citroen c5 aircross a family suv that defies inflation what i'll explain everything in
00:07a moment i'll also tell you what changed since the last generation what this citroen has in
00:13common with the jeep and why the mazda mx5 is better i mean the mx5 is always better but
00:19in this case why the mazda mx5 is better than the c5 aircross if you play golf
00:27let's check it out
00:32the citroen c5 aircross is a compact suv launched in europe in 2018. at the time it was part of
00:38the
00:38french psa group which also offered the pejo 3008 5008 later the opel grandland which back then was
00:46the grandland x and the ds7 which was back then a ds7 crossback following the merger of psa with fiat
00:52chrysler the newly formed celantis group now offers 14 brands and some models share platforms
00:57so this here is basically a jeep compass only better but that's for a different episode which
01:02channel members can watch early and without ads the new citroen c5 aircross still boasts an avant-garde
01:10design although it's now more refined and sharper than the curvy and playful colorful details we
01:17remember from the first generation i really like the rear lamps which citroen calls light wings
01:22it's a shame the press car is all black as many of the details visible on the lighter colored cars
01:28are disappearing on this black blob an elegant black blob but a blob nonetheless
01:36the second generation citroen c5 aircross is 15 centimeters longer than the model it replaces
01:42with a six centimeters longer wheelbase it's also slightly taller and narrower at 456 centimeters long
01:50and with a wheelbase of over 278 centimeters it's bigger than the new toyota rav4
01:57boot capacity is 565 liters in five seat configuration and 1688 liters in two seat configuration which is
02:04similar to the first generation model but that had sliding rear seats there is still no way to fit the
02:10parcel shelf under the false floor however the floor can be lowered by 10 centimeters still leaving
02:16about 10 centimeters of storage at the bottom of the trunk the mini spare tire could probably fit under
02:22the floor in its upper position this may be an option available in some markets but elsewhere citroen
02:27makes you pay even for a tire repair kit the boot dimensions are 95 centimeters deep by the floor 103
02:36centimeters
02:37wide between the wheel arches and the height to the parcel shelf is 50 or 60 centimeters depending on the
02:43position of the floor simple math shows that the manufacturer's stated boot capacity is accurate
02:50unfortunately if you play golf and think that you've bought a large suv in which you and your mate can
02:55go
02:55hit a few at the club i have some bad news even a single bag of clubs won't fit across
03:01it'll only fit diagonally
03:03and to carry two sets you have to fold the backrest it's a bit embarrassing to find that the same
03:09golf
03:09bag fits in my mazda mx5 but don't worry you can always sell your kids for experiments and buy the
03:16only car you really need in your life and know that mx5 is not for sale and now for my
03:23three random
03:23suitcases test which will tell you how much i can stuff in the boot of the c5 aircross as long
03:29as these
03:30aren't golf clubs but you'll have to use your imagination so i can easily fit another medium
03:36size hard shell here or a couple of cabin size suitcases or many pieces of soft luggage not bad
03:44bon voyage there are shopping bag hooks and a 12 volt outlet the boot opens and closes with gesture or
03:53with a button on the tailgate longer wheelbase usually translates into more passenger space
04:00in this case it's primarily more space for the rear passengers who have five centimeters more legroom
04:06i remember saying in the previous generation that while the legroom wasn't bad it wasn't great for a
04:12car with this longer wheelbase no complaints here at least not about the legroom i know you're not watching
04:17this to hear me sing praises about every car i review citron replaced three individually sliding
04:24seats with a bench that doesn't move this is likely due to different drivetrains that citron uses here
04:31regardless of the drivetrain mhev phv or bev the citron c5 aircross has the same boot capacity
04:37now the sliding rear seats take up some space that could be used for battery or additional electronics
04:43the backrest splits 40 20 40 there's an armrest with cup holders air conditioning vents two usbc ports
04:51and an almost flat floor the seats are comfortable the backrest angle is adjustable citron uses terms
04:58like suv lounge and sofa design the amount of space is comparable to the c5x some trim levels and or
05:07equipment packs offer third zone climate control and seat heating unfortunately ice fix anchor points
05:13are still only available on the rear side seats the door pockets are spacious and the doors cover the
05:21sills the c5 aircross is not just an suv lounge but also a high-tech cocoon this refers of course
05:30to the
05:30cockpit with its waterfall display as far as i remember hyundai used a similar term for the tucson
05:37console back in the day anyway just like the exterior citroen has opted for elegant modernity inside
05:47is it for better or worse it's different on the downside if piano black wasn't bad enough
05:55using it on touch points like the door handles buttons on the steering wheel and the center console
06:02is a questionable choice to say the least i'd go crazy if i didn't wipe this down at least once
06:08a day
06:09and don't get me started on the scratches on the plus side the cruise control and multimedia controls
06:15are finally on the steering wheel instead of the joysticks hidden behind it the wireless charger works
06:21storage under the armrest is cooled and the door pockets are spacious
06:26and the infotainment system is for a stellantis product exceptionally good which means absolutely
06:32average but wireless apple carplay and android auto work quirks there's plenty of space under the console
06:40there are usb ports over there and cup holders and i remember a similar solution in the ds number 8
06:47and
06:47it's not the best idea because in order to reach for your drink you have to lean down there the
06:54shape
06:54of the glove compartment is somewhat awkward but it was the same in the previous generation and those speakers
07:06strange don't you think the seats are comfortable and i like the upholstery of course i'd prefer it to be
07:13leather rather than plastic but eco-friendly means we have to sit on someone else's trash
07:19only the driver's seat is electrically adjustable and has memory settings but there is an option to
07:25have both seats electrically adjustable heated and ventilated this car gets heated seats and heated
07:31steering wheel but in order to turn these on you have to click through the climate control menu
07:36citroen has left a few physical buttons on the dashboard including those for turning on the front and
07:41rear window defrosters there is also a physical volume knob but most of the climate control
07:47settings are on the screen how do you control them while driving let's say i want to increase the
07:52passenger side temperature by two degrees and lower it on the driver's side and i also want to turn
07:58on the steering wheel heating it's impossible to do this without taking my eyes off the road
08:03and when android auto is on it's even worse on the plus side isa and a few other settings can
08:12be assigned
08:12to a single button which if long pressed turns everything off
08:35as i mentioned earlier the c5 aircross is available as a mild hybrid a plug-in hybrid or an electric
08:40vehicle
08:41this is the mild hybrid version it uses the same 1.2 liter three-cylinder engine as the opel frontera
08:47together with the electric motor it produces 145 horsepower the electric motor is integrated into a
08:53six-speed dual clutch gearbox the electric motor assists the combustion engine when starting off at
09:02constant speeds both motors work together to reduce fuel consumption and during slow parking maneuvers the
09:10c5 aircross hybrid can operate solely on electric power for short distances
09:21speaking of parking maneuvers visibility is okay but in order to turn on the 360 camera when you're still
09:27driving forward you need two clicks on the screen rather than a single press of a physical button
09:33on the plus side this is finally a true 360 camera not a stitched image from the front and rear
09:40camera
09:41of the area which they no longer see and how's the citroen c5 aircross to park
09:49the street i live on is four meters wide and my gate is three meters wide the c5 aircross
09:55easily reverses into my driveway no emergency intervention like in some cars which break for the gate posts
10:05an annoying thing is that when i stop and the engine is already off because the stop and start
10:12mild hybrid etc etc and then i press the off button to turn off the ignition the engine sometimes starts
10:21restarts for a split second the fuel tank capacity is 55 liters which is two liters more than in the
10:27previous generation the manufacturer promises fuel economy of around five and a half liters per 100
10:33kilometers combined realistically it's about six and a half liters claimed zero to 100 kilometers per hour time
10:44as 10.2 seconds i got 10.1 seconds in sport mode and 10.6 in normal mode it's not
10:51a speed demon obviously
10:52this is bigger and heavier than the opel frontera with the same powertrain so the engine has more weight
10:58to pull also in this application somehow the engine sounds rougher than in the frontera the c5 aircross in
11:06this spec weighs 1554 kilograms and can tow up to 1200 kilograms if you go for the phev you can
11:14tow a bit more
11:18while the c5 aircross retains its 20 centimeters ground clearance it still lacks all-wheel drive not
11:26even in the electric version that's probably the only reason to buy a jeep compass instead of a c5 aircross
11:32the compass in europe will offer all-wheel drive in the extended range electric version but you really really
11:41want to have a compass
11:49here you only have normal sport and eco modes there is an optional grip control feature which changes esp
11:56settings depending on the road surface you'll get slightly better traction but once you're stuck
12:01that's it the c5 aircross still comes with front progressive hydraulic bump stops but now it also
12:08gets them on the rear axle speed bumps are not an issue but once you get to a rougher bit
12:14of road
12:15the suspension feels busy even despite the relatively high profile tires the assist 2.0 adaptive cruise
12:23control and lane keeping assist aren't class leading adaptive cruise control reacts too late to the road
12:29conditions especially when accelerating when the lane ahead opens up the lane keeping assist is too
12:35nervous around the corners otherwise the citroen c5 aircross is a pleasant car for every day short to
12:44medium distance driving it's unobtrusive reasonably comfortable and not too noisy just don't expect any bells and whistles
13:11price of the citroen c5 aircross started 33 990 euro and this is where i'll talk about inflation since 2019
13:20when i reviewed the first generation c5 aircross prices across the eu went up by an average of 27
13:27back then the prices started around 23 000 euro which is about 29 grand in today's money
13:35but back then the base model was a manual and lacked many of the features which for better or worse
13:42are now standard this test car with options costs 41 740 euro so it's actually cheaper than an equivalent
13:52model back in 2019. the citroen c5 aircross is a car for people who don't particularly care about
14:00performance but appreciate unique design at an affordable price this is a nice shopping trolley the
14:06best in this segment from stellantis and if you're into shopping trolleys probably one of the best
14:12overall now you may disagree with me leave a comment and i'll be happy to explain why you're wrong
