Most veins carry blood toward the heart—but the hepatic portal vein follows a remarkable route first.

It carries blood from the digestive organs and several other abdominal organs to the liver. Inside the liver, that blood flows through microscopic channels called sinusoids, where it mixes with blood from the hepatic artery and passes alongside liver cells.

Afterward, it drains through central veins and hepatic veins toward the inferior vena cava.

Discover this unusual vascular pathway through premium 3D medical CGI from Body Spectra.

Educational content only. This animation simplifies complex anatomy, and not all absorbed nutrients follow the same route—many long-chain dietary fats initially travel through the lymphatic system.
