00:00Your gutter should handle this, but a bad installation can ruin your house.
00:05Before you install gutters, you need to be sure your fascia is strong.
00:10Regardless if your fascia is a 1x or a 2x, it needs to be attached well.
00:15But if your fascia board is rotted or not attached well, your gutter can easily pull off.
00:21Measure out and mark your gutter.
00:23Install a gutter end cap, crimp it, and seal the inside of the gutter.
00:28If we don't seal it, water will leak out the seams.
00:31If your gutter is too high, ice and snow can run down your roofline and rip off your gutter.
00:36If the gutters are too low, the water can miss.
00:40For corners, I add sealant to our corner.
00:42That will take our corner and we'll hook it and then fold it.
00:45And then we'll press this down into the sealant.
00:48If we don't seal it, the corner will leak.
00:50Then we'll drill out and install rivets.
00:54And install your brackets.
00:55We'll tuck the back of our gutter under our drip edge and pitch our gutter towards the downspout.
01:01Without proper pitch, water and debris will build up inside the gutter.
01:05If your gutter is in front of the drip edge, water will run behind the gutter.
01:09Or the drip edge gets notched out and rot your fascia.
01:12Brackets hold your gutter up.
01:15If your spacing between hangers is too far, the gutters can sag.
01:19But even if it's done right, you can still have problems.
01:22How do we keep debris from filling up our gutters and clogging up your downspout?
01:26You could install gutter guards or foam.
01:31But these gutters can still clog, can allow water to drain over your gutter, and still needs to be cleaned
01:36off.
01:37All they do is help with cleaning and avoid major clogs.
01:41But even with proper installation, this can still damage your house.
01:45Downspouts need to properly overlap.
01:47If the direction is wrong, water will leak out.
01:50Cut your downspout.
01:52We'll trace our outlet and cut out our outlet.
01:55And drop it in.
01:56And rivet up through your flange.
01:59Install a gutter strap.
02:00Attach your downspout and screw it in.
02:03Fold over your band.
02:04Screws are easier to pull.
02:06But rivets look better.
02:08And this keeps your gutter attached.
02:10But even with this all installed correctly, there's still one big problem.
02:14Downspouts need to push the water away from the structure.
02:16If your downspout's in the walkway, they usually get smashed.
02:20So we'll install something more durable.
02:22We'll dig out a trench and install a pop-up drain.
02:25Be sure it has downhill pitch.
02:28And backfilled with stone.
02:30Now when water makes it into the downspout, water can travel under your walkway.
02:34And don't forget to install a clean-out.
02:38But none of this matters if you don't have proper grade.
02:40This could be running straight back into your house.
