They've become synonymous with takeaway sushi, but the soy sauce fish has been outlawed in South Australia. In what's been described as a nation-first move, the tiny plastic container joins a raft of other single-use plastics to be banned in the state.
00:00It may be convenient and a little cute, but the soy sauce fish is used in the blink of an eye, so South Australia's saying sayonara.
00:12We know that plastics can play an important role in our economy and our society, but when they're single use, they're often going directly to waste.
00:21Sushi outlets are switching the fish for eco-friendly sachets, with some passing the cost on to consumers.
00:28It's significantly more expensive, so we're having to charge extra costs, which is the 15 cents.
00:35At least not wasting the soy sauce.
00:37They're also filling big bottles for the counter.
00:40We have the glass shared bottles for them to use, but not everyone likes using it.

00:48I hope that they change it to something which is more eco-friendly, but it remains the same with the shape of it.
00:55Yeah, I think it's a fair idea I suppose.
00:57For the better of the world long term, it makes sense.
01:00They're not the only items to be banned from September the 1st.
01:04Plastic cutlery and straws attached to containers, and cups and bowls made of expanded polystyrene are all out.
01:11These plastics will eventually break down into smaller pieces of microplastic that we know that our marine animals are eating.
01:16The move keeping SA at the forefront of phasing out plastic waste, after state and territory governments made a joint agreement in 2021.
01:25When it comes to the outlawing of single use plastics, one state will make an action and the rest follow.
01:31A call to action for others to follow the lead.
