Why can one sugar maple show green, gold, orange and red leaves at the same time? As days shorten, the leaf makes less chlorophyll and its green colour fades. Yellow-orange pigments already in the leaf become easier to see, while some leaves make new red pigments called anthocyanins. Weather affects how bright the colours become, and not every leaf turns red.
