Why do outer rotation speeds in many spiral galaxies remain higher than the visible stars and gas alone would lead us to expect? The answer does not come from a single picture. It takes shape as astronomers compare several ways gravity appears: the motions traced by starlight and gas, the tiny distortions of background galaxies, the separated gas and lensing mass in a cluster collision, and the matter budget inferred from the oldest light and later distance measurements.
