Researchers detected tiny traces of iron-60 in 295 kilograms of Antarctic ice covering roughly 40,000–81,000 years ago. This rare isotope can be produced in supernovae. The measured signal was only slightly above expected cosmic-ray production; comparing it with younger records suggests changes in the Solar System’s local interstellar environment. Ancient ice can preserve clues to our journey through space.
