00:04thank you so much for tricking and treating with me this year happy Halloween the sands
00:11have risen the heavens have parted and my power will be unleashed to turn you into a mummy okay
00:20okay Brendan does not like being turned into a mummy I told you you're gonna know it's all right
00:29fine let's just get over how are you gonna do what's that this is just a little makeup here
00:33just close your eyes and then so you just sort of put this around your eye you'll see I won't
00:42be
00:42able to see a last Mary showed me had a skeleton jump on well it's a special little sock thing
00:50you'll be happy you have this on oh you get this at the hardware store yeah you wear this when
00:55playing
00:55paintball playing paintball yeah all kids should wear this when they play paintball
01:02how do you feel I feel pretty goofy what are you gonna do next Martha it's a good thing there's
01:07no
01:07mirror okay I'm gonna safety pin this to your to my and that's to your ear that's to your ear
01:19yeah and this is just because you want me to stop talking
01:23turning you into a mummy well the good thing about this is is that you know Martha you're making
01:30homemade costumes exactly I got kids I I did my state of Spongebob you know it's a quick fix it's
01:38fun but you know well how'd you look at Spongebob ridiculous the kids liked it though didn't they
01:43I've got little kids are you getting hot yet am I yet yet yet yet well you're gonna get a
01:48little
01:49hotter I'm afraid at this point in the show I think people don't even know who's on it if
01:53they're tuning in right now because my face is all wrapped up Brendan Fraser and he is a mummy killer
01:58he kills mummies so we decided to let the mummies have their revenge depends to make you look a little
02:07bit ancient well it's it's good like we're making homemade costumes they they're more personalized
02:13therefore and children will love being a mummy and that it doesn't really cost anything just a few
02:20pieces of muslin right and a pair of dad's old long johns and your dignity now just one more little
02:28thing yes it will make it much less painful and much easier to make you into the rest of your
02:34mummy head
02:35there feet there it's nice and comfy take a rest thanks a lot I'll do that you can grow but
02:46you're
02:47never going home I tied you to the brazier mr. Fraser I'm gonna roast your liver till it's rare and
02:59juicy
03:01and deliver it to the mummies who are waiting for you those mummies are in cahoots with me they're getting
03:16even and this time you won't escape nice and crispy nice and hot this spot that feels kind of good
03:31actually do you remember when you were a child those houses on your street that went all out on Halloween
03:36night and decorated themselves to the hilt well I tried to be one of those houses and I create a
03:43kind
03:44of ambience a little bit terrifying right here on my front porch I have a giant pumpkin a roof ornament
03:51in the shape of a very scary cat and on my front door right on the screen these balloon spiders
03:57and it's
03:58real easy these spider legs have little tiny floral wires in them so you can just bend them a little
04:03bit
04:03and insert them in your screen they'll stay there very nicely until you want them to come off now from
04:11the little ceiling here of the portico I'm hanging flying bats these are very stiff cardboard cutouts of the
04:21scariest bats imaginable there's some monofilament which is fish line and little push pins clear plastic and I'm just
04:29going to place these in strategic spots on the ceiling above my head they'll get tangled in
04:38the wind but you know doesn't matter because they really do clank around and make noise and create a
04:44little bit more scare on Halloween night and some of my bushes are covered with that spider webbing that you
04:52can
04:52get at craft stores I always use that in black or white my pillars here some more of those balloon
04:58spiders and now for the scariest effect of all dry ice I love dry ice I always have ever since
05:06I've been
05:07a child the one caution is to always handle dry ice with heavy heavy gloves here we have a whole
05:15tub of
05:15it dry ice comes in blocks of about 10 to 15 pounds and what it is is solid carbon dioxide
05:23and it has this
05:24very special feature of what they call sublimation and that means that it passes from the gaseous to the
05:33solid and from the solid to the gaseous at will look at this it is fascinating when you break a
05:41piece of dry ice
05:42up into smaller pieces it will lose its activity faster so you have to handle it with care and these
05:49small pieces can be put into some sort of metallic container or glass container and when you add water
05:56to the carbon dioxide you'll see what happens we're just going to put a few pieces and when you add
06:05water
06:06hear the noise that's just the noise of the carbon dioxide on the cast iron and as you add water
06:14there's hissing and there's smoking it's a lot more effective than any smoke machine and a lot more
06:23terrifying than any other effect on halloween night well I hope you like my dress and my friend
06:32Igor he's an extraordinary makeup artist going under the alias of Michael Thomas he was the creative
06:37genius behind the coneheads I was commandment conehead but through you see her and today I'm
06:44putting myself in his amazing hands this maestro is when he transformed me into the bride of Frankenstein
06:51Elsa Lanchester who in what year was this 1935 Igor knew her back then by the way of course so
06:58you've
06:58been around a long time how old are you 125 that's how old you are oh good here we go
07:04now let's see
07:06we have this very unusual makeup it's pale grayish flesh I whip this up specially for you it's called
07:14the bride's foundation it's all vegetable right absolutely some of my best friends are right
07:19vegetables I'm sure turn this way please the bride of Frankenstein's makeup was created by
07:26Jack Pierce who also do Frankenstein yes you know all his secrets right to tell you the truth yes there
07:34are no secrets so is Igor like Parchipsy or yes there is a little bit of Tigania blood my full
07:42name is Igor
07:43Koval okay so now he's going to put on something this is powder this is no color powder so that
07:54you don't cover up the
07:55grayish color of my skin that is correct but how are you going to make my chin have a dimple
08:01in it
08:02I will paint one on today I will be painting on the effects so to paint things on this would
08:10be a good thing a good
08:12ah Igor you're so cute there are shadows and highlights yes you have to keep your shadows pale
08:20you see or else they begin to look very very false turn please what I'm doing right now is accentuating
08:31the curvature of your cheekbones how is the curvature wonderful
08:39Igor knows whose house he's in that's right Igor's smart
08:45now let's see she has a shadow beneath her lip very sensual
08:51now what I'm doing is painting a highlight on the tops of your cheekbones also
08:59we'll bring out the sides of your jaw directly under your cheekbone
09:06let's see next make the chin pop out more
09:12I'm putting on a light layer of powder between applications of shadows and highlights now I shift gears
09:24to the strong shadows and the strong highlights now you're using what color oh dark colors this is
09:31dark kind of a medium gray green it works well as a shadow because green is the opposite color of
09:42flesh so
09:43this way we give the impression of creating a shadow I don't know about you Bill I'm having a heck
09:51of a good time
09:54if someone had told me 125 years ago that I would be making up Martha Stewart to look like the
10:03bride of Frankenstein
10:07a little blending okay at this point I think we will put that dimple in the chin
10:15I don't think I look anything like her
10:18it's not yet anyway
10:20the bride is kind of like an icon you know sort of like Santa Claus if you get all the
10:27selling points
10:29whoever it is winds up looking like the person they are supposed to be portraying
10:35dimple
10:38now you have to cover up my eyebrows to make her eyebrows
10:41just the outer portion I can put a little makeup on it or some wax
10:45wax
10:46use it directly from the tube
10:48ah
10:51to put this a touch of powder
10:53to flatten it then I will extend your eyebrows artificially with pencil
10:58the surprise story what what what really went on there
11:02when Henry Frankenstein created the monster open your eyes and look up please
11:08the villagers chased him into a windmill
11:12set it on fire and thought that the monster was burned to death
11:17but he survived and when the monster teamed up with one of Henry Frankenstein's old professors
11:26Dr. Pretorius he came back to Henry Frankenstein demanding a mate
11:32Henry Frankenstein had had enough of this and refused
11:37but Dr. Pretorius added a little encouragement to the situation by kidnapping Elizabeth Frankenstein
11:45with that kind of incentive
11:47he teamed up with Dr. Pretorius and together they created a mate for the monster
11:55now are you using only one set of false eyelashes
11:58the bride's eyelashes were rather exaggerated
12:01close your eyes please
12:07please keep your eyes closed
12:09this will need to dry
12:11what comes next are the lips
12:13she had very very
12:16sensuous lips
12:17yes
12:17sort of a combination of rosebuds and
12:20and be so
12:21right
12:22Cupid's bow
12:24now for Igor please say
12:26eee we stretch the lip
12:28good
12:29I will be over painting your lips a bit
12:33and I'll let you in on a little makeup tip
12:35if you're going to do that sort of thing
12:37how to make it look a little more natural
12:40we over paint the lower lip
12:43over paint
12:44there we go
12:46nicely
12:46we put on the upper lip
12:49I'm over painting like a demon here
12:53and now what we're going to do is put on the crowning glory of the wig
13:00oh the wig looks great
13:01Elsa Lanchester's hair actually was red
13:05oh
13:07hello
13:07hello
13:08this is my assistant Christine
13:12okay
13:15like that
13:16how's it for your locale thing
13:21grimping and popping
13:24oh I love it
13:26oh I'm missing my little blonde flyaways
13:30but I think I'm looking quite a bit like
13:33my prototype
13:35I just can't imagine a Halloween without pumpkins and gourds and squashes
13:39this is a pie pumpkin from the test gardens down in Burpee in Pennsylvania
13:44and there's such wonderful shapes and sizes for carved out jack-o'-lanterns
13:50we have on the TV staff a super carver Cory Tippin
13:54and these are his handiwork
13:56cutting out a face like this using the green of an unripe pumpkin to highlight the eyes
14:02this transparency really looks great when it's lit with a candle
14:06and look I love this geometric cutout
14:09that is a really beautiful looking pumpkin when it's illuminated
14:12and this Cory used cookie cutters to cut out the star shapes and the teardrops
14:18that's really pretty
14:21and look at this
14:22he takes an ordinary pumpkin with a twisted stem
14:25it looks like pretty much nothing
14:27but turn it this way
14:29and you have a really funny face with a very twisted nose
14:33and this is another very good idea
14:36if you don't want to burn your fingers when you're lighting your pumpkins
14:40carve out the bottom of the pumpkin
14:43this can sit on top of another pumpkin like that
14:46or it can be placed right over a candle
14:49and I've been spending my time carving salt glazed pottery
14:53this is a motif from the 18th century that is pierced with decorative cutouts
15:00and then don't forget the Jack belittles
15:03these are tender little squashes that are very edible
15:06but as luminarias or as little votive candles
15:10I think they're going to be great along my front walk
15:13and now we have with us today also
15:16an absolutely master carver
15:19George Kuhn from Boston
15:21he's an architect and I'd love to introduce you to him
15:23hi George
15:25hello Martha
15:26I discovered George's work about two years ago
15:28in a newspaper article
15:29and we called him up and asked him to do a pumpkin carving for the magazine
15:33and this year George is surprising me
15:36what are you making today?
15:38I'm carving a witch
15:39where do you get your ideas for the pumpkin carving?
15:42well they come to me in dreams
15:44and sometimes I look in a mirror
15:47I haven't seen one of those
15:49and you just sketch these on with an indelible marker
15:54and it's going to be a relief really
15:55you carve away
15:56there's a lot of
15:57can I turn it around?
15:58yep
15:58this is the beginning of the carving
16:00it's a different way of working
16:02what are your tools?
16:02well basically I use an exacto knife
16:05it's really sharp
16:05there's also just a regular kitchen knife for paring
16:08and sometimes you'll want to go to this gigantic knife
16:12if you want to shape cheeks
16:14or once I made fish scales using this tool
16:19and it was a matter of pushing into the flesh and carving it away and having it layered
16:24was it a mermaid or?
16:25it was a dragon
16:26it went around the pumpkin and bit its own tail
16:29so he has great imagination
16:31and to carve like this
16:32you really do need imagination
16:33but George assures me that anybody can carve a piece in a pumpkin
16:39that's true
16:39well I think the important thing is to realize it's only a pumpkin
16:42and it's for fun
16:43so I mean it's not life work
16:46you just go ahead and do it
16:47and you won't fail
16:48can we see what you've done?
16:50yeah here's the witch
16:53wow
16:55oh gosh and here's her warch
16:57oh let's see the bottom
16:58this is George's invention
17:00I think this is the most brilliant thing
17:02to put the candle in the base
17:04you light it here and then put the pumpkin over
17:07you just have to make sure there's a hole in the top
17:09so it vents and it's easier on your hands
17:11you burn your fingers less frequently
17:14and you made a V here
17:15I made a V just to make sure I get it
17:16just like you would on the top I think
17:18okay so once you carve her how long will she last?
17:21four to five days if you're very careful
17:23frequent spraying
17:24I had some vitamin C for the night time
17:27and I cover it with a cloth that's wet too
17:29George she looks so fantastic
17:31I think she's going to take on a life of her own
17:33what do you think?
17:34I wonder
17:37do you ever notice that curtains always need adjusting?
17:40these are our very special Halloween curtains
17:43and if you'd like to know how to create them
17:46I'll show you
17:47they're made out of cheesecloth
17:49dipped in our secret potions
17:51and our creepy crawlers love them
17:54the cheesecloth
17:55very simple
17:56you can buy hardware grade like this
17:58it's very gauzy
18:00when you open it up
18:02it's inexpensive
18:03and it's reusable
18:04you can also find
18:06Martha Stewart everyday cheesecloth
18:10available at Kmart stores
18:11and this is a very nice dense weave
18:15that takes the dye exactly right
18:19we have some already cut and torn to measure
18:24tatter the edges very nicely
18:27you don't want new looking curtains do you?
18:31like this
18:32and dip it first in a light tea
18:35tea is a wonderful dye
18:37it's tasty too
18:39but it does its job beautifully in just a few seconds
18:44just dip your cloth
18:46into the tea
18:49and wring it out
18:51and notice I'm wearing protective gloves
18:54I don't want my hands tea dyed
18:59all right
19:00now just adjusts
19:03and I would say it's rather insipid
19:07so we're going to darken the edges
19:10and make it look even a little more aged
19:14you can use dark tea
19:17light coffee
19:17dark coffee
19:20so start with the dark coffee
19:22that's really good for just an edge here or there
19:28this is espresso
19:29just turn on your machine
19:31or brew a pot of very black coffee
19:35and a little bit of lighter coffee
19:40maybe somewhere in the center of your curtain
19:44squeeze that out
19:47and hang it out to dry
19:49it looks perfect
19:52I'm going to do draperies for every room in my room
19:56in my house
19:57and notice the creepy crawlers just gravitate to these curtains
20:03let them dry
20:04when you want to hang it on your windows
20:07just take it off the rack
20:10fluff it up
20:11and tack it up on the windows
20:13as we all know
20:14Halloween isn't just for children
20:16if you're having a grown-up party
20:18here's a dark and mysterious cocktail
20:20it's made with cassis and blackcurrant nectar
20:23if you haven't seen blackcurrant nectar
20:25well it is a delectable drink
20:27all these nectars
20:28they're all delicious
20:29they're a little on the sweet side
20:31but when you finish making the punch
20:33you'll want a little bit of that sweet sugar
20:37fill an ice cube tray
20:39because you want an undiluted punch
20:42and if you use ice cubes made out of one of the ingredients
20:46you will not be diluting your drink
20:49it takes about two cups to fill an ice cube tray
20:53now get this right into the freezer
20:55and let it freeze until it's hard
20:57at least three hours
20:59so give yourself some time
21:02we have some already frozen
21:08boy that's beautiful and syrupy
21:10and this will just let sit out
21:12we're gonna get it right into our punch bowl
21:14in a medium saucepan
21:16combine four cups more
21:18of this lovely blackcurrant nectar
21:21blackcurrants are blackberries
21:24they are related to redcurrants
21:26and to whitecurrants
21:27they're very pungent
21:29and they are the basis for
21:30something called cassis
21:33which is a French or European liqueur
21:37made out of blackcurrants
21:39and it is often added in cocktails
21:42like a wonderful cure royal
21:45if a little bit of cassis in champagne
21:48or just a cure which is cassis in white wine
21:51we want eight fresh sage leaves
21:53very important that they be fresh
21:56that's four, eight
21:57and two sticks, two big fat sticks of cinnamon
22:01heat this up and simmer for 15 minutes
22:05we already have one started
22:08it's been sitting here on the stove
22:10and what we want to do with it
22:11it's really infused with the flavor
22:14of the sage and the cinnamon
22:15is just strain it
22:16so that all the spices
22:18and the herbs
22:22are strained out
22:23and this is what we're going to mix
22:25with the rest of our cocktail
22:27right in the punch bowl
22:29you can combine this flavored nectar
22:34with one cup of cassis
22:39this is that lovely thick syrupy cassis
22:46mmm so good
22:47one cup
22:51you can see that it's quite thick
22:55two cups of sparkling cider
22:59sparkling cider is carbonated apple juice
23:07but you could add champagne to this if you like
23:11and two thirds of a cup of ice cold vodka
23:23and add some club soda
23:27club soda makes it even more sparkly
23:32about one cup of club soda
23:34and now release your ice cubes
23:38and let these fall right down into your punch
23:43and you see what I mean about not diluting your punch
23:48and as soon as it's very cold
23:52take a sip
23:54you'll certainly enjoy it
23:56spook all your friends with a cauldron of Halloween punch
24:00with black ice
24:02no I'm not cooking up a witch's brew
24:05I'm actually making these very cute little ghosts
24:10white chocolate ghosts
24:12which are great for Halloween
24:14and if you wrap them in little cellophane packages like this
24:18they're very nice to hand out at your front door
24:20as a trick or treat
24:21and your children will adore them
24:24you need some white chocolate bits
24:26we're using one package of white chocolate bits
24:28and melting the chocolate
24:30just softening it over simmering water
24:32until the bits are melted
24:36or almost melted
24:38and to this we're going to add
24:41one and a half tablespoons of vegetable oil
24:43the vegetable oil tends to make the white chocolate glistening
24:49and a little bit more malleable
24:51and a little bit easier to work with
24:55and just stir this up
25:00see how it loosens it up
25:02and stir it up
25:04get those lumps out of it
25:08and now using parchment paper
25:11or a silpat
25:12just spoon
25:14a ghostly shape
25:17a head
25:19and you can spread this down
25:21two little arms
25:28and a tail
25:30using about
25:31oh probably
25:32one heaping tablespoon
25:37of white chocolate
25:39place a lollipop stick
25:44you can put a little bit more chocolate over the lollipop stick
25:48just so it hardens nicely
25:50and holds in
25:52and you may get something that looks like a ghost
25:54or something that looks like a little airplane
26:05and another stick
26:06just place it into the chocolate
26:09you can twirl the stick around
26:16now I usually do all of this in this costume of course
26:24it's comfortable
26:28it's appropriate
26:36oh
26:37we're gonna lose this eye
26:38but
26:39half an eye is better than no eye
26:41wouldn't you say
26:42so keep making them and making them
26:44and as they harden
26:45transfer to the refrigerator for at least five minutes
26:49and we have some
26:51already hardened
26:56right here
26:57and you can gently extricate
27:02your charming ghosts
27:06from your wax paper
27:09backing
27:12and serve them up to those
27:14hungry little hordes
27:16who appear at the door
