In 1977, the Citicorp Center opened in New York City as an engineering marvel. It sat on giant fifty foot stilts positioned in the middle of each side rather than at the corners. This unique design accommodated a historic church that owned part of the land underneath. However, a major structural flaw remained hidden until a college student questioned the calculations a year later.

Chief engineer William LeMessurier realized the building used bolted joints instead of welded ones. Strong quartering winds could easily push the fifty nine story tower over, causing a catastrophic disaster in Manhattan. Instead of covering up the mistake, LeMessurier secretly coordinated with city officials and emergency teams to fix the problem.

Over three months in 1978, construction crews worked at night to weld heavy steel plates over every weak joint. The public knew nothing about the secret emergency repairs until an article revealed the full story almost twenty years later. Today, the skyscraper stands strong as a to engineering honesty.
