The Echo speaker launched in 2014, and Amazon says hundreds of millions of its devices are in use. The Wall Street Journal reported that Amazon's devices business lost more than 25 billion dollars from 2017 to 2021, and Business Insider reported Alexa and other devices were on pace to lose about 10 billion dollars in 2022. This film follows the Echo from its invite only launch in November 2014, the razor and blades plan, the downstream impact metric, the 2022 cost review and layoffs, and the arrival of Alexa Plus in 2025 and 2026. We do the math on those reported numbers, set them against Amazon's own results, include Amazon's response, and look at whether Alexa Plus changes the picture. Every loss figure is a reported number from internal documents seen by reporters, the 25 billion dollar figure covers the whole devices business and not Alexa alone, and anything we calculated is labelled "our math". Amazon does not publish a profit and loss for Alexa or its devices unit, and no wrongdoing is alleged.
