Congress minority wing vice president Haseeb Khan has demanded that at least 100 out of 403 assembly seats in Uttar Pradesh be allocated to Muslim candidates under the Samajwadi Party-Congress alliance. Speaking on political representation, Haseeb Khan stated that with a 20 percent population share, Muslims are entitled to a proportionate share of seats rather than just voting for others. He noted that leaders often raise slogans of representation based on population share, arguing that Muslim candidates should exclusively contest Muslim-majority constituencies. Referring to past elections, Khan mentioned that Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav had previously given tickets to community members, but asserted that greater representation must be granted now. The demand introduces fresh complexities into seat-sharing negotiations between the Samajwadi Party and Congress, as deliberations over winnable constituencies continue.

00:00A demand for the Muslim quota in Uttar Pradesh by the Congress Party.
00:04The Muslim face, so to say, for the Congress Party is making a big demand vis-à-vis the seats.
00:09Congress's minority wing, Deputy Chief, Hazib Khan, has spoken up and said
00:13that there should be 100 seats in Uttar Pradesh for the Muslim community members.
00:20They're at the centre of Congress's Abhijwadi Party Alliance and Congress Nita maintains
00:2520% Muslims are not here to vote alone. Only Muslim picks in Muslim majority seats is what he's saying.
00:33And basically referring to how there has to be a maximum representation of the Muslim community members.
00:39And he is partially correct when he says that in terms of when you look at the voting pattern in
00:46Uttar Pradesh,
00:47Samajwadi Party and the Congress Alliance usually have got a majority Muslim vote.
00:53And he says if that's happening, who are we voting for?
00:55We need 100 seats from Muslim members in the Assembly.
01:00Let's listen in to Hazib Khan.
01:57Now what Congress's unit's Deputy Chief here is saying of the Muslim wing, that when the Muslims are voting, especially
02:05for the Congress and Majmadi Party Alliance, and they usually vote in mass, especially if it's an alliance, we then
02:11want a representation of the Muslim candidates as well, and that means for the seats, at least 100 seats in
02:17Uttar Pradesh, must go to Muslim candidates if they are at the center of Congress and SP Alliance.
02:2220% Muslims are not here to vote alone, so there should be, in Muslim majority seat areas, there should
02:30be only a Muslim candidate.
02:32Now remember how it happens usually when it comes to candidates, if there are reservations, that is usually about and
02:38with regard to caste equations or even a woman seat.
02:42The Muslim majority seat, so Muslim majority areas, to have a Muslim pick is usually out of choice, looking at
02:49the political permutations combinations, but to really ask for it and say it must be done because that's the reason
02:55we are voting for the Congress, Samajwadi Party could be a catch-22 when it comes to the Samajwadi Party
03:01and the Congress Party.
03:02And for this alliance to go through, there will be a lot of discussions to happen, and one of this
03:07will be on agenda.
